Re: Belly Belly

Really don't like the chorus, or much of the rest of the song. The lyrics are so bad it's actually sad to think Dave could be okay releasing them on an album by DMB.

Good point but as in the past with this band (and many other things) first opinions are changed. I'm not saying I love the song or hate the song, Im saying you shouldn't make a drastic opinion about the song (or the album) before we've heard it more and in better quality. It just annoys me when people won't give a song a chance even hours after it was released.

Ok, fair enough. I'm just saying that a lot of the time people freak out when people offer up serious criticism but leave it alone when people offer up hyperbolic praise, when both are pretty premature at this point.

The verse sounds like Kill the King, which isn't a fantastic thing. I like the chorus.

Well there are like 5 threads about this song already and on the other threads the general consensus is that it is very good with terrible lyrics,

which if people went back and looked at the other songs that fits this type on other albums they would say what?...the same exact thing. Great music with terrible lyrics. So many songs from the big 3 could be picked apart to have terrible lyrics. People need to get over the lyrics and enjoy the song for what its trying to be. Dreaming Tree was a song trying to be great based off lyrics and succeeded if Billies was trying the same thing it would fail. Its the music that makes it great. People need to realize this more.

Love this song, and usually I have a good sense of what is cheesy, but I don't think the chorus is cheese at all. It's just a feel good tune. The melody is really connecting with my emotionally.

    Re: Belly Belly

I read a lot of posts, but I usually don't write any... but here it goes. I hope this new album is only mediocre to this fan base. I hope a lot of people get all hyped up about it like they did Stand Up, and then realize after a few listens it's just as shallow or bland. Finally we as Dave Matthews Band fans might finally realize that A) Steve Lillywhite is human just like any other producer... he is not a God, B) This band will never write music like the first three albums C) Big Whiskey wasn't all that bad. In fact all albums, even Everday, have had their own highs and lows. I actually thought there was never a good flow in UTTAD. What do I know, though... I originally started listening to this band in the fall of 2001. My first CD was Everyday. And finally D) new music that doesn't sound like the first three albums doesn't have to be a bad thing! Let the band grow, age, and evolve in their dynamics... just like the members of the band do as people... just as any living thing does. I've actually enjoyed the growth of the band. I liked Kill the King, Sugar Will and Break Free. We've been so lucky as a fan base to have such a great band as DMB. How many other bands tour every year? How many other bands write so much new music that they have new songs every year... write so much music that only half of their songs since 2000 have made it on a studio release just because there's just so much music?! So damn, why can't we just enjoy the band already?!

We have five out of eleven songs. I doubt that the studio versions are going to be that drastically different for the three we haven't heard studio.

Yeah, the music is there, but thoughtful lyrics are really lacking on these songs. He's said the word "baby" about 93 times in 5 songs. It's really depressing that an icon like DJM would dish out a half assed message like he has. Seriously how long do you think it took him to write these lyrics? Half of them he's already almost verbatim sang in previous songs.

I mean "the one who waits the listener my words to land upon" is such poetic phasing even though he's not really saying anything. At least it's evident that he's spent time thinking about his work. Not to mention all the incredibly insightful and meaningful songs he's written -- that have an important message (IMO Seek Up, Cry Freedom, Spoon, Minarets, Squirm.....) But "Dont give up I know you can see all the world and the mess that were making lift up your eyes lift up your heart" ? Come on Dave. This is fucking bush league crap that I wrote when I was 13.

I want to defend him as being one of the GOAT songwriters, but when HE ( and it's ONLY Dave - the rest is some tight ass shit by the band) turns out this caliber work I'm at a loss.

so 5 out of 11 is enough to judge an entire album and say its better or worse than another one?

Mercy studio from live was drastically different and changed many peoples opinions on the overall quality of the song. Stop being a hater already. You have been one of the most consistent haters on the new album I have noticed. Just give it a chance and listen to the album thoroughly before you make these types of judgements already. Damn. I dont know what it is about Ants but for some reason most people think the cool and right thing to do is be negative from the get go about anything that happens with this band right from the beginning. Ill be the first to say BW was better than what we have heard from the band in awhile but isnt the quality music we have heard from this band. But after hearing Mercy studio this is quality music from DMB. It is. No ifs or buts about it. This is DMB. We have heard half the album now and only 2 studio songs so far and you guys are both going to say Everyday is better which that album has 4 songs that arent/cant be played live and another song that completely ruined #36? Yeah no way in hell that album is better than AFTW. No way. Not a chance in hell and I say that as a person that believes Everyday is an overall good album and the album that got me into the band, but I unlike most here isnt biased towards the album that made me become an Ants member. I can already tell after hearing Gaucho, Mercy, and The Riff that this band is finally back to where we wanted them to be 7 years ago.

I agree that I've been negative about this new album. It's my natural personality, but if it's bothered people (and I understand that it could), I apologize. I will try consider these songs more fully before posting opinions.

But I do think it's unfair to attack people who post negative opinions. I get calling out trolls who just say "song blows" or something, but people who have honestly considered a song and don't like it still get destroyed by a lot of people on this site.

I just think either way, love or hate, should be free to express themselves. Yes, I have been negative, but I have never criticized anyone excessively who enjoys any new song.

Oh please. Mercy was not freaking ANY bloody different than what we heard in concert. They played the song on stage EXACTLY how it sounds in studio, but the studio version is ... i dont know MASTERED!??!! It's still half assed crap.

    And we've heard 6/11
Belly Belly Belly Belly Nice Belly
    Mercy
    Gaucho
    Sweet
    If Only
    The Riff

We've opened half of our christmas presents already.

Does anyone think the ending sounds a little bit like So Right? I think this song is in that world beat/jazz funk category, kind of like Shake Me and Tripping Billies. I like it. Going to be awesome on the album with Lillywhite's touch.

People complain like they want this album to be on par with the Big 3, but I don't think many on here could actually handle that (they love those albums to much for anything to ever come close, even if it objectively did). I would be perfectly happy if this turned out to be true, and from what I've heard so far, its shaping up to be that way.

Yeah I'm digging the music. It's lyrically where they're falling short for me.
