Re: Belly Belly

I dont know what you think you're going to hear on a studio cut that's not EXACTLY what they play on stage -- just not mastered in a studio. Any examples?[/QUOTE]

Well just two from this album alone off the top of my head. In the studio version of Mercy, Boyd & Dave's guitar have an effect on them. Dave sings the song w/ much more intensity live, where the studio cut is more about subtle feeling. The horns are very mixed into the background, as are Timmy's electric effects in studio. Not to mention, Timmy & Carter are heavy improvisers..

Unless they start bringing out a couple dozen kids at the end of Gaucho, the studio version will always be different..

Clearly If Only is going to sound way different with some organs..

I think it's fair to say we can expect many differences between studio & live versions of songs.

After reading some of the posts on this thread, and others, I think some of you would only be satisfied if he put 11 recordings of Halloween on the album. I'm not exactly sure what you want.

As far as Belly Belly goes, great tune. Who gives a s__t about lyrics. This song is catchy and has potential for a good jam at the end once developed.

Thats fair but I know a majority of my favorite DMB tunes are songs that didnt grab me at first and took me a couple listens to recognize the greatness. Hell I even thought Captain off tLWS was a piece of shit until I gave it a chance and listened a few more times. Now I think its up their for some of this bands greatest work they've done in the studio.

Not all songs need growing time, but some of the ones that stick with you through time sure do and if someone is going to listen to a song from a cell phone right after its debuted and decide they think it sucks and isnt quality DMB then thats an entirely different thing than what you asked.

I see what you're saying, but there is a difference when a song is "fun" (Belly Belly) and a song is dark/alternative (Captain). I can see needing time for Captain to grow on you, but with a song that's upbeat, in your face like Belly Belly there's just a different kind of reaction process.

Then you just dont like it. Doesnt make it mediocre tho.

I guess this is DMB's fault since they held onto the album this long and didnt release it earlier. Playing more new songs as they go along on the tour just enables the fans to pick apart each song as they debut and causes wayyy more criticism. If they released the album all at once without playing anything it would have been much more positive opinions about each thing and people would focus on the songs they personally love more than the ones they dont but instead we werent given that option. Wish it was released before or midway through the tour. Oh well.

yeah i mean im not saying that they wont grow on me, but you're right. the live recordings dont sound all that great, and so far i've just been more excited about seeing songs like Typical be in rotation than i am about new songs being debuted

This is firmly in the Too Much/WWYS/I Did It/Shake Me/Rapunzel group of DMB songs. Obviously, one's preference for the songs in this group is going to vary, but I think it fits pretty well in that group.

This should be an official DMBc mission statement or something. We hear it for every song now.

Im not happy with the lyrics on the album so far tbh, but i suspect the strongest lyrics are going to be on the last three tracks.

Good news. I didn't do the math was just commenting on a person above me and taking their word for it. Hopefully the best is yet to come.

I may have misunderstood what they meant by "last 3 tracks"

BBN is not the same type of song as Spoon, not even close. If you want to hold BBN to a similar type song in the Big Three, go with Too Much, WWYS, or Rapunzel.

and that has what to do with the songs themselves? How can you even form an opinion of Belly Belly vs Belly Full without actually even hearing both of the songs and how they might or might not be related to each other?

I don't think he is. Besides, awkward song titles are a mainstay of DMB.
