I'll take a stab at this:

Drunken Soldier = Wasting time trying to be something you're not.

Nobody wants to be a soldier (interesting tie in to LITHOG), whether it's in a literal sense or otherwise, but it's pretty easy to be brainwashed by an imaginary obligation - such as going to war - which I believe Dave asserts is tantamount to being drunk on whatever BS is being fed to you; I think this is a similar notion to what John Butler means in "Used to Get High". Based on what we know about Dave and his lyrical stylings, I think that he has crafted the title to be almost redundant in that a soldier is already drunk by definition.

You can't ignore the overt reference to war, as Dave has not made it a mystery that he is emphatically against it (also referenced in the album opener), but just like Gaucho, he is making a broader statement on humanity and believing in one's self - a message that is surely meant for his children and generations to come. Whether you agree with him or not, at least this theme is consistent.

This song is amazing. I really like the lyrics, despite several people saying that he is lyrically incompetent, and the music is unbelievable. It definitely lived up to all the hype for me.

Love the tune. However....can someone explain the meaning of tying "be your best and not try to be somethin you're not" with "that's not a star, that's a satellite" at the end? Any information or thought would be appreciated!

    Amazing tune!

If Dave thinks all the shit you said about soldiers, than he is an idiot. If you think that, then you are.

The notion that people don't want to be soldiers is just flat out false. Some people dream of it, for some it's a rite of passage in their family.

However, some people are soldiers because it is a job, more than most I'd imagine. Very few people I know join and stay in for political reasons.

Your whole post is just full of wrong.

The song is great, I have no idea why it's titled the way it is.

Satellites in the sky look like stars, so in a way it's trying to be something it's not?

Dave has also not made it a mystery that he fully supports the troops despite the fact that he thinks Bush used them wrongly.

    So your post is false.

I'll throw in another buck fiddy or so in my analysis of this tune:

While it initially seems to be a non sequitur, I think it sticks pretty closely to the theme: don't force something to be something that it's not. You know that's a satellite, don't wish upon it pretending otherwise. He may not take it as far as a false wish, though, it could just be, basically, that things are not always what they seem - Dave is offering a dose of reality, which to me is really the theme of the album.

Yikes...thanks for the input, but this was in no way an attack on soldiers - I really didn't mean to give anyone that impression. I have lots of family who have served and have tremendous respect for them; I apologize to anyone offended by my assumptions on where Dave's head was at.

In this light, I may have been off-base with assuming that he meant that the title was redundant...maybe "drunken" is a necessary qualifier, almost a juxtaposition, to say that while being a soldier may be a noble cause, your views become a bit skewed when drunken.

I really wasn't trying to be as inflammatory as this was interpreted, sorry about that.

Not crazy about the lyricson this one by any means but I think dave's delivery is great. Did anyone think of pig when you heard this line?: "You fill up your head, Fill up your heart, 'Cause that’s all we got"

Actually, now that you mention it I guess so, but at first that line reminded me of "open up your head, open up you primitive" from teh Skwormz.

My guess is the name is similar to The Riff or #41. Dave probably thought the song drifts around like a drunken soldier. I can hear him saying, "Let's work on that big fucking drunken soldier song."

one of the first lessons you should have learned about DMB is that their song titles sometimes don't mean shit when it comes to the song itself. could there be a meaning to the title? sure, but you can also make pretty big reaches trying to make it mean something when there isn't a meaning. its not like Blue Water Baboon Farm has any correlation to the song itself, and neither does granny, raven, or any of the numbers, among others.

Maybe I'm the only one, but wasn't anybody a little disappointed in the song? I mean, the music is complex and intricate, I know. But at the same time, it was like the song was going to end with an awesome jam and it died down to a couple slow verses. And the chorus seemed a little redundant with the whole "preaching" feel of the album, with Gaucho's chorus, Mercy's lyrics. I don't mean to step on anybody's toes who loved the song, but does anybody feel this way?

The Riff actually has some meaning I believe. Song is about his wife and I believe she is The Riff. Think about the lyrics in terms of that. To Dave, Ashley is The Riff of his life, it's constant, but it doesn't have stay the same. Riffs evolve over time.

Wait wait wait, this is different though! All of the songs you mentioned have explanations already: Blue Water Baboon Farm only has the "Baboon Farm" part of the title left over from someone who used to give all of DMB's songs funny names. It's officially Blue Water, and the lyrics are about a river of blue water. Granny, though the word itself isn't in the lyrics, is definitely literal - the "old and wise, with clouded eyes" part is about a granny. Raven was about an actual raven and contained the word raven back in '00 (http://dmbalmanac.com/Lyrics.aspx?sid=69&iid=12099). The numbered songs are just lazy; they're more non-titles than anything else.

I can't think of a DMB song that has an actual title completely unrelated to its lyrics (except maybe The Riff and Seven, which are both references to the music, so they don't really count).

I don't mean to step on anybody's toes who loved the song, but does anybody feel this way?

i was initially disappointed because of how much hype the song got. the band was saying it was their best album closer and the beginning really seemed like it would build, like warehouse or two step. the itself is really good, but the second half of it, especially with the outro, felt underwhelming. there was really no big climax to the song other than the final chorus.

At about 2:10 in, the "solo", is it Boyd or Jeff. I initially and still think it is jeff, but someone mentioned in another thread that it was boyd. Am I going crazy?

Has the Beginning of the Outro been discussed? It reminds me of Us and Them by Pink Floyd a bit.

Ok, good, I was feeling crazy. I know DMB is a live band and songs evolve over time for the better, but the album closer seemed underwhelming (like you said) and over hyped to me at least.
