They just needed to be drastically lower in the mix. And the So Rightish guitar lick Tim plays on the last chorus is basically non-existent in the studio mix, and that is a damn shame, because that puppy is so damn infectious and helps differentiate the last chorus (which the song builds to) from the first one. However, that is kind of lost on the studio cut.

Just because Lillywhite produced BBN, doesn't make it better then SMLAM. That song absolutely rocks and, as much as I like BBN, kicks its ass.

I should clarify, SMLAM is one of my fave songs off BW and was a perfect start to that album imo. It just rocks. I love BBN, I really do, but don't shoot down SMLAM based on lyrics (esp compared to BBN) or funk/in your face music. It's all there. Both songs are rock solid.

I don't see what it is about these lyrics that aren't very much "Dave Matthews lyrics."

funny you say that... SMTS was the song that first popped into my head when I was thinking of what older song this sounds the most similar to.

I freaking love the part where Dave & co. keep repeating "Love" during Boyd's solo. Sounds so cool.

as others have expressed, the background vocals ("Love") are a tad bit overdone and annoying, but after listening a couple of times I don't mind them as much

Overall, it is a fun, sexy, funky, and catchy as hell song that is captured fairly well in the studio and is damn good live

This song has Too Much written all over it. You can practically sing the Too Much verse over the BBN guitar riff.

I think the background vocals add some dimension to the song, but agree that the love, love, love is a little bit too loud. That part was actually kind of jarring on my first listen. I love that you can hear Boyd's solo on the album version because live Dave's vocals take a lot away from it.

I love shake me, especially in tandem with grux, but theres something about BBN that seems more compelling at this point. Perhaps its Boyd...

Agree, when I heard the beginning of this song when they first played it I thought it sounded a little like SMLAM, but BBN is a better song by lightyears

This actually might be my favorite track outside of Snow Outside and Drunken Soldier. It's crazy to me how different everyone's opinions are on favorite/least favorite tracks, yet just about everyone is universally on board with this album.

Silly > shitty, every single time. Not to mention Rapunzel's music destroys BBN's, which is a shame you're comparing the two at all considering BBN's music is better than most of the new albums sound.

is "jack and jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water" any worse than "splish splash you and me taking a bath" ?

also, I think shake me like a monkey and belly belly nice are killer studio tracks, fun, campy upbeat songs, why do they all have to be deep, throw those two in with too much, what would you say and the like, I love dave's quote about belly belly nice "it's either about fruit farming or sex, one of the two"

It is literally almost the same line. I am not going to say that Belly Belly Nice has extrodinary lyrics, because it doesn't - but it has lyrics for what the song's message intends. Everyone gets so caught up in two to three lines that they complete erase themselves from other good lines, and other brilliant parts of music.

I know people are caught up on the "Jack and Jill" and "Belly Jelly"

    But in the same vein;

"When the juice is drippin' off your chin, one peach is not enough"

    and

"All the light that shines up, the gift that everyone has for the taking. And happiness, so pure as this, is surely worth the making"

Are pretty good lines when dealing with the song's subject.

Away from the lyrics, I think this song hits the EXACT way Too Much and What Would You Say had. This song is so much more Too Much and WWYS than it is SMLAM.

There are syncopated jams, but not syncopated to the point where you'd expect a Conductor to jump on stage (kind of like SMLAM) - the range each member has in this song is brilliant. Everyone shines, EVERYONE. The song was meant to and should have been meant to revolve around the guitar riff. It's addicting and creative. I love how Lillywhite kept it just the Riff, beat and Vocals at first, as the song progresses you hear everyone come in at the time they want to come in at.

At one point you have both horns squaring off against each other in the left channel, Boyd blasting in the right channel - Carter double bass in both channels - and that riff still hits you in the face.

Because of some "off" lyrics - this song gets a bad rap that it doesn't deserve.
