Re: Belly Belly Nice is everything SMLAM should have been

smlam is the the most under appreciated, most shat on track on these boards....don't get me wrong the lyrics are god awful, everything else about it is great, and belly belly nice aint much different than smlam, even on a production level, belly belly is imo one of the weaker produced tracks on aftw

if there is one ridiculous jake statement i would agree with its that smlam was the most important dmb song in a while....that song either a. got people back into the band or b. got new people into the band, many examples from people i know that it had this effect on

I am really liking this song, not necessarily because of the lyrics although I don't think that they are that bad, but because it is fun and upbeat. It won't be in the top three of the album for me but I don't think it blows. I like it.

"Splish splash me and you taking a bath" and the Jack and Jill line from WWYS are good examples of things DM gets away with because the songs are 15-20 years old, that people tear him to shreds for today. I'd like to nominate most of Rapunzel as well.

I don't love the lyrics to BBN but I don't love splish splash or "good they locked the door" either. They don't ruin the songs for me though.

BBN is what it is...a fun song about love and sex. It doesn't pretend to be anything more. The lyrics, examined out of context (and this goes for SMLM, Rapunzel, WWYS, Too Much, etc.), are ridiculous. However, within the context of the song and given the song's intent, they're appropriate. If you hate them, well then that's your thing. If you love 'em, then it's another song within DMB's catalog that you can enjoy. Seems pretty black and white to me.

What are some of the songs you guys have written? Just curious since Dave get's hammered for his lyrics just about every time the band puts something new out. I think BBN has a solid shot being the next single. It's musically catchy, and I think the chorus is something you can see casual people on the radio hearing and loving. As cheesy as Ants thinks it is, it's probably better than 90% of things on the radio right now. Then people get hooked, buy the album, and punch in the face! Snow Outside->Drunken Soldier.

Definitely better than Lady Gaga and all that awful crap they play on the radio... by miles.

Don't take it personally. To him, a "ballwasher" is anyone who is a fan of more things this Band does than he is. Which is everything. It's hard to determine half the time if he's actually a fan or just a professional troll.

Makes me wonder how many times in 2013 we'll see:

    SMLAM>BBN>Cornbread
    Cornbread>BBN
    BBN>SMLAM

    Or some deviation of that.

I agree. A fun, playful song like BBN should have fun, playful lyrics.

90%-100% of what is on the radio is complete bullshit. I haven't touched my tuner in years. Everytime I'm in a store and they're playing something I've never heard I just laugh and think, "Wow, mainstream music never gets and better."

I very much like Belly Belly Nice.
    I love the music.
The lyrics flow and don't suck.
I love the title because its ridiculous.
And I like the belly jelly line.

    So eat it.

Now that we're on the topic, why's Dave think it's a good idea to rhyme "belly" with "jelly" on BOTH of these tunes? The two (belly and jelly, that is) have nothing to do with each other in any good way.

Lyrically, both songs have a horrible line or two. They're both alright though.

Wait, what am I complaining about... this is the same brain that decided to put the same exact lyric in Everybody Wake Up and Out of My Hands in the album Stand Up. (Our finest hour arrives, See the pig dressed in his finest fine, The believers stand behind him and smile, As the day lights up with fire)

This song's sick...and a lot better than SMLAM IMO. I probably would take BBN at my next 10 shows. I wish I hadn't had ever seen Shake Me.

thats because songs get boring when they're played too much. familiarity in anything will lead to it becoming boring. its just a fact of life in general. its why relationships fail. its why people more for a "change of scenery." and the same thing happens with songs. it doesn't matter what song it is, but when its played all the time, it gets boring. the better the song, the longer leash, but it will eventually get boring.

SMTS and TM are great songs, but they were played constantly back around 2007 and people got tired of them. TM went away for a while and people wanted it back because they had time to miss it. for as awesome as Two Step is, people are tired of it closing sets. set closer seems like the only spot its ever played in. its not a worse song because of it, but its not as exciting when you know its coming.

BW songs are not bad songs, but they were shoved down our throats for 2+ full tours, so we're just tired of hearing them. and if they treat the AFTW songs the same way, we're going to feel the same way. moderation is the key.

    Good point.

moderation may be the key, but this band goes from city to city and yes people do follow them from city to city, but there are far more greater people at the shows that have yet to hear certain new tunes and the band will play the new stuff more than anything else as they move from venue to venue. its the people on the boards that seem to get tired of the tunes rather than the people who attend the shows.

Most people who attend the shows probably aren't the setlist-watching/bitching folks around here though, it's probably the casual fans who have an email alert from LiveNation/TM for a bunch of bands they like and see, "Oh, DMB is gonna be close by - I haven't seen them in a few years, I should go." So for them, every show they see, every setlist is new and exciting. If each one of us saw a show once a year or once every two years we wouldn't bitch about a setlist, we'd probably just be glad to see a show. It's the hardcore fans that get annoyed by stuff like that.
