On my first listen I really was not grabbed by this song for some reason. It may have been the culmination of excitement and emotions etc of wanting to hear this record so badly and not knowing what to expect, so I was thrown a little and just didn't latch on to it. But, damn have I grown to absolutely LOVE this song after about 6 or so listens. It is just quintessential DMB and carries with it all that I want from this band in a song:
great work by Dave on guitar, lyrics, and vocal delivery
    Boyd solo
great horn lines and a sax solo
    Carter ripping it apart
the space to really expand live
and a groove I can dance to all day haha

Perfect opening track for this record.

I think this album is easily as good as the Big3 so far. I got the same feeling listening to it (with headphones) as I did from the first time I heard BTCS, just pure bliss, and its gotten better with every listen (5 or 6 so far).

People on here with their Big3 bias just ruin this site, and ruin new good material for everyone. I think virtually every song on this album is better than
some of the Big3 songs; Crash Into Me and Stay come to mind immediately. My theory is that if this was Dave's first album, and somehow UTTAD was his newest, people would say that NOOO song on UTTAD belongs in the big3 with AFTW, Crash, and BTCS. Not a bash against you b/c you are only comparing opening tracks, but I've seen people on this board saying none of these songs belong in the Big3 discussion. Stop putting those undeniably great albums on such a pedestal and just enjoy the music like normal folks.

I do understand that this is only goes out to a minority of hardcoriest fans on this site who have seen 1billion shows and complain about every setlist post 2004.....most of those people have approximately 50,000+ post also.
I'm right there with you about the way the Big 3 is hailed by many on this site. I think several songs on this album are Big 3 worthy (including Broken Things, actually), BOWA is just SUCH a good song. And I think I said in another thread that Broken Things is only behind BOWA and Rapunzel as album openers. That's only my humble opinion though.

Broken Things is the most purchased song from AFTW on iTunes. Which I thought was interesting.

After three listens, I'm torn between this song and If Only for my favorite. Boyd's solo reminds me of Spoon. The beginning of the song reminds me of some post-Gabriel Genesis song that I can't think of right now, perhaps something from Abacab. I'm going to have to look into this. I need a fall tour, I need to see this live before the year's out.

It's really not that complicated of a riff. I was toying around with it on my guitar last night. Nothing harder than any of Dave's other riffy stuff. Gaucho is actually a bit more complicated the way he strums it.

Anyone else see that the composer for Broken Things was listed as John Alagia? Belly Full, too.

6 of the 11 tracks Dave is not listed as a composer. Really spreading it around these days.

Nailed it! I hope that this song gets jammed out with an extended solo section for Boyd and maybe some Dave wailing or something a la American Baby LT 6.

i agree too. maybe just a touch of american baby in there. i mostly get seek up/the stone and a bit of blue water in that boyd solo. and i must say, dave's chorus vocs are some of the clearest i have heard in a long time. crystal clear.

This might be my favorite song on the album. Such a great tune. My favorite lyrics are:

Stars shine down from the black,
As we're picking through this broken glass
Well, how could we have ever known
That our lives would be so
    fully of beautifully broken things

Just a great set of lyrics, my favorite set of Dave's lyrics for a while.

You have some good points. It's dumb to pretend that EVERY song on the big 3 is a genius work of art miles ahead of anything new. Or that all of Dave's songwriting now is terrible compared to all his old stuff. Especially on Crash

DIDO's chorus is lazy at best, the verse is almost as bad. In my not so humble opinion, most if not all of this album is better than DIDO.
Let You Down had potential. I love the chords and the mood. But Dave mailed it in with the lyrics and song structure. Ruined the song the same way he's ruined new songs.

Then again, there aren't any songs on AFTW that are as good as Two Step or #41

The album overall is not as good as any of the big 3 albums, I don't think, but would I place some songs on AFTW higher on my list than some songs in the big 3? Absolutely.

AFTW has 3 songs that I think are really good. The big 3 each have at least 7.

Also, I think BOWA is better than Broken Things. Not that I don't like Broken Things, I do. The violin solo is orgasmic, the bari work is wonderful and Dave's vocal melodies (in the verse at least) are very good. But BOWA is better.

On the booklet it says "All songs written by David J Matthews except Broken Things and Belly Full (Matthews/Alagia)
Then a list of other band credits.

Writing the same as he has for years, mainly himself but with help from producers/band members.

Listening to the album for a few days despite alot of the chorus's being very repetitive I can't help but to sing them in the car. They really get in your head and are hypnotic.

Is it weird that I keep listening really closely to this song to hear what Dave is playing on the verses and still can't heart it. There's too much going on to hear it clearly. Lillywhite said Dave is still learning how to play the guitar part and sing simultaneously so it must be awesome

Debating a better opening song between BOWA and BT is stupid.
    Stop.

This song is beautiful. I'm a proud fan to hear such a great song to open a long-anticipated album.
And Drunken Soldier is a FANTASTIC finish. Stunning!

Just enjoy. Who cares if it's better, or whatever, than prior albums.

Dave kinda slammed (IMHO) this community in a Rolling Stone interview, saying we could prevent him from getting new fans.
Maybe because we spend so much time arguing, and not celebrating.
This album is really really good.
Some songs are better than others.
A couple are HALL OF FAME worthy (you decide which ones, I have my picks).
Very few bands have such a lasting impact. Let's enjoy it.
Geesh, how many more albums do you think they'll make?
    2? 3?
So we are going to spend our time bitching about which song is better than the one before it, and before we know it, they retire.
Guess what? Then we will ALL LOVE EVERY SONG!!!!!!!!
"Hey, they were the BEST BAND EVER!!!! I LOVE EVERY SONG THEY EVER MADE!!!"

I'll make you really feel at home by disgreeing with you

IMO, people are overreacting to what Dave said in RS. It was one sentence, and it didn't sound overly harsh to me. I'm a hardcore myself, but I don't think he was wrong. Some within the hardcore group can be intimidating for new fans. I've been a fan since 1994, and I lurked here for years before I ever joined or posted because of that.

    Anyway, back on topic -

Broken Things is great on so many levels. To me, the best thing about it is that it announces, right at the beginning of the album, that Boyd is back. The song itself is one of my two favorites here, the other being Snow Outside.

LOL HAHAH!!! Great sentence. Thanks for baptizing me!!

I agree with you. It was just one sentence.
But it wasn't a flattering one.

Damn, we spend a lot of time following and discussing their wonderful music.
And in return we are potentially keeping them from getting new fans.

No matter the intent, it kinda hurt my feelings a little. I was like, "damn, I'm kinda part of that. Sorry Dave".

Then I had a glass of Rum and it all got better.

    Points taken.
I love the music DMB has given us, and I know everyone reading this does too... and if you don't, go fucking read another website!

    Whiskey all around!
