I'll chime in even tho I wasn't on the first page.

I think Broken Things is one of the band's best songs since the 90s. Can't get enough of it. BBN is still a good tune to me as well. I honestly skip the next few songs until I hit The Riff. Then I skip again until Rooftop. From there I'll listen till the end.

All in all, still think it's their 5th best, behind the big 3 and Busted Stuff.

Y'all are so hilarious. I think everyone is significantly disappointed by the album, and so people are in denial about it I guess. Saying it's even close to busted stuff is honestly ridiculous, and I don't think anyone really believes that.

Disagreed. Busted Stuff = AFTW... most of the songs are pretty good, you can listen to the whole album all the way through, but some songs definitely stand out high above others. Tied for 4th!

Strongly disagree. While Busted Stuff has a better collection of songs, Away From The World is a better album IMO

Unfortunately, this album has not held up very well for me. I'd place it on par with Big Whiskey at the moment. It's certainly not bad, I like it OK, but I haven't had the urge to listen to it in over two months now.

This album is nowhere near as strong as I had perceived it being back in September, but still great. When I look at the tracklisting on my iTunes and look at the times played, the first and last track have been played approximately 100 times apiece. The rest are all at about the 30 times listened to area with If Only (the clear dud of the album) being played a few times.

I wouldn't call If Only "the clear dud of the album" or even a dud at all. Great song.

Listened to the whole album a few times this weekend on a long drive. First time I've really listened to it straight through since Oct/Nov. I think it holds up.

album has held up so well for me. still love it front to back. it is FAR FAR FAR superior to BW, has a more genuine feel to it, more organic it spots for sure.

Re: Anyone Else Just Thrilled To Tears?

I really do like this album. I still think Belly Belly Full is a waste of space. It's a great little song but it's so short and it's just Dave solo. When I get a DMB record I want every song to include DMB. There's 11 tracks on the album and 2 of them are, for the most part, Dave solo. I like Sweet, it's a nice little song, but they could have definitely filled Sweet and Belly Belly Full's spots with 2 real full band songs. Or even if they kept Sweet, ditched Belly Belly Full for a full band tune and add one more on there to make a 12 track album. But whatever, they didn't and it's still a great album...

Broken Things is fantastic. This definitely feels like old school DMB and so does Belly Belly Nice. Belly Belly Nice was one of the first new songs in a few years that I just went nuts listening to the first time I heard it. When it broke into Boyd's solo I got a very old DMB feeling. Mercy is absolutely beautiful and does not deserve the hate it gets. It's so powerful and has such a great message. I won't keep going with every detail of every song. They really are all great.

So my only REAL quam with the album is how it's playing out live. I think the songs sound great BUT...NO BOYD! One of everyone's favorite things about the album was how Boyd appears everywhere on the album. Obviously it's been talked about numbers of times about how Boyd is lacking in the live setting. But it's making me not feel as strong about the album. It's hard to explain exactly. It's just that when I hear an album I get excited and start to think ahead to, "ok, where are they going to take these songs live?". Boyd has so many great parts and you can't hear him at the shows. We all know the Belly Belly Nice solo is gone, which is one of the best parts to the songs. You can't hear him Rooftop. You can barely hear him on Broken Things, which showcases some of his nicest work in years...just such a disappointment whatever is going on with Boyd's sound. It's really bringing my excitement about the band down. It was tough enough losing Roi, but now it feels like we've lost Boyd too and those were two of the members that were always the most interesting.

Still absolutley in love with this CD...even some of the songs I wasn't crazy about in the beginning (Gaucho, Sweet) have grown on me.

Broken Things, Belly Belly Nice, If Only, Rooftop and Snow Outside are right there in the top 30-40 songs with the best the band has ever done in my opinion.

Re: Anyone Else Just Thrilled To Tears?

Not in love, but sometimes the album really hits me in a good way.

Broken Things, Mercy, The Riff, If Only, Rooftop, and Snow Outside I can listen to anytime.

BBN, Gaucho, and Drunken are all solid.

Belly Full and Sweet are throwaways but still listenable.

I love the quality of the production still, but not in love with how Carter sounds. He just seems muffled and his toms aren't as evident as other albums. Listening to Carter play on The Riff and then listening to Rapunzel or Kit Kat Jam, it's as if he is using a different drum set that doesn't have as much to play. Often feels one-dimensional.

I'd put it above Big Whiskey purely because BW has some lazy shit on it, but it's gotta be 5th overall.

I thought the album translated horribly in Chicago last year, but hoping that was an anomaly. With the new additions to Rooftop and Gaucho I hope that everything else progresses just as well.

Ironically, Snow Outside is what hit me hardest on the album, and what has disappointed me most significantly in the Live setting.

It seems to suffer from Dreamsofourfathersshakemelikeamonkey syndrome.

Agreed. Dave can't quite get ahold of this song live.

I think they will work out the kinks though. Drunken Soldier didn't thrill me live either, but imagine it'll improve.

They always get better at playing songs from a new album a year or two later.
