The Riff came on randomly the other day. I had forgotten how great that song is.

Re: Anyone Else Just Thrilled To Tears?

I've been listening to this album a decent amount lately. I have to say I really can't believe the amount of backlash it gets. I think this is about as solid a release as it gets. To me this album represents a complete overview of the band's entire history. I really think almost every song on this album could fit on another album. Below I have a list of what album each song resembles, in my opinion of course.

Broken Things - Before These Crowded Streets/Busted Stuff.
    Belly Belly Nice - Crash
    Mercy - Crash
    Gaucho - Everday/Busted Stuff
    Sweet - Some Devil
The Riff - Busted Stuff/Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King
    Belly Full - Some Devil
If Only - Everyday/Stand Up/Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King
Rooftop - Under the Table and Dreaming/Crash
    Snow Outside - Crash
Drunken Soldier - Before These Crowded Streets/Away From the World : )

This is by no means a perfect album, but I really do think it's a great one and these songs certainly deserve more plays in a live setting...with Boyd fully turned up!

    Oh...yes they fucking can.
I wonder if people will feel this way with the new album, or go in instantly jaded and closed minded due to Cavallo being involved.

I'm excited to see what they do with him. First producer the band has worked with more than once other than Lillywhite. That to me says there's a good relationship there and they're excited to work together again. That's the kind of formula you want when a band is heading into the studio. He produced a fantastic album so I can't wait to see what they come up with.

I want to cry, but not with happiness.

The album makes me so sad. DMB's first five albums, in my opinion, ranged from good to fantastic. Then Stand Up came, which I feel was not as good but not the crap everyone makes it out to be. Big Whiskey was their first record that felt really "eh" but it had enough to redeem it.

This does not. It's the sound of a group that feels like it's lost any confidence it once had. The songs are weak, the production sounds outdated and unimaginative, Dave's voice is too whiny-sounding...

...hate me all you want, but Lillywhite does not equal a good DMB record.

AFTW is a solid DMB album all the way through. It's not a kid's or even a college student's record, though. It's probably the most mature work produced by this band to date. And if it doesn't strike you now, it will in a few years.

I could see AFTW eventually--years from now--creeping into a lot of people's Top 3 albums, at the very least Top 4. As far as the Lillywhite effect, he does deserve some credit for capturing the songs and giving us a smooth, nuanced production (for all that I adore Big Whiskey, Cavallo always beats people over the head with his production style).

On a related note, "If Only" for all it's simplicity is truly becoming one of my favorite DMB songs.

There comes a time(s) in a lot of peoples' lives when they find that perfect song. It has everything he/she seeks in a piece of music.

For me, it is Snow Outside.

    It has:

-playful lyrics, bass, horns, and strings
    -a soothing/simple/repeating guitar riff
    -loving lyrics
    -impeccable drumming
-an epic and complex outro that evokes powerful emotions such as love, passion, and happiness
-the ability to be played over and over again
    -the Lillywhite touch
-complex time signature that seems so simple

    ...feel free to add more.

I was listening to Rooftop in the car the other day, and although I always liked the song, it wasn't until this day that I noticed how awesome the bridge is...just so perfect. http://youtu.be/oZujfXV8uDo?t=3m

I have high hopes for Cavallo and this new album. And honestly I cant believe AFTW Didn't relieve more airplay than it did. I'm not in love with every song, but I think it deserves some praise.

Gave the album a re-listen this evening. That "new car smell" has worn off, and it's easier to judge the album more objectively when the excitement of new material has gone. I personally gotta say the album holds up remarkably well. Beginning to end it feels like a DMB album, where I think Big Whiskey, for better or worse, at times doesn't. Though I know most people love the album, I feel that there's a possibility that some of the fans who just "like" AFTW or aren't quite "thrilled to tears" with it may find it, at some point, really grow on them. Similar maybe to the way "The Stone" or the Some Devil album really grew on people.

Long story short, I re-listened to the album and was thrilled to tears. Hidden gem song: Gaucho

I think its a great release . The problem of course was the marketing , or lack of it. Zero support . I don't get it. Why release an album and ignore it ?

Belly Belly Nice should have been the first single during the summer of 2012 . The band could have made a wacky I Did It/FTWII type of video , and it would have done well IMO.

Rooftop should have been the follow up single when the album dropped . Then Mercy .

It just made/makes no sense how mgt and the band have treated this release . The lack of support during the 2013 tour was ridiculous .

Why Dave continues to shove average at best songs like 7 and Spaceman down our throats , year after year , but ignores the new BETTER material is frustrating . I fear this trend will continue this summer . Ignore AFTW , and keep busting out Spaceman > Cornbread , 7 and the never going away , mediocre at best You Might Die Trying .

^ Marketing was very strange indeed. I agree with your BBN, Rooftop, Mercy single ideas. It seems like a no-brainer, which is why it's so confusing.

I'm listening to Dark Side of the Moon and I definitely believe this was a huge influence on AFTW.

Especially on Speak to Me/Breathe and Great Gig in the Sky.

    It's crazy. Anyone else agree/disagree?

I agree. While some people put some hate on this song, lyrically for the most part, I love the atmosphere this song has, and the guitar work is signature D&T acoustic domination.

I am not thrilled in the least...all it does is convince me that DMB has completely lost what they had during the 90s and early 2000s. I found Stand Up to be pretty average and BW to be meh, and found this to be just weak. I hope they get album 9 out as soon as possible. I'm really impatient for news on it.

Anyways, I'm not trying to dissuade anyone here from loving and appreciating this album. I'm just voicing my thoughts on it.

Away From the World is the best album that DMB has put out. That is how I feel. I can understand a fan not agreeing with that statement but do not care to debate it.

The Lyrics are written by a Man who is now 47 and has changed from the man who wrote the fantastic songs of his past. Some of you are not able to relate to those lyrics, and that is ok. You may someday.

    Peace out.

Re: Anyone Else Just Thrilled To Tears?

This album is terrible. It gets worse for me every time I hear it. Live is even worse. The only song that is not a piss break song for me is Rooftop. As for the Dark Side of the Moon influence. I can hear it. And probably why i hate the album. Hate that band and album with the fire of a thousand suns. If I wanted to listen to Pink Floyd, I'd listen to Pink Floyd. DMB to me has never sounded like another band which is what i love about them. They never needed to do that. They were a unique band with a unique sound all their own. To put out this steaming pile of feces sounding like someone else doesn't cut it for me and never will. And Dave's constant high pitched whiny vocals are weak. Add in that he's singing the worst lyrical album he's ever written and I don't care if I ever hear this album again. I'll forever pretend it never happened.
