Do any AFTW songs crack your top 5 on any of the Big 3 albums?

So, AFTW is getting almost universal praise here...and I agree. I think it is a great album.

Seems that the general consensus is that this may not crack the Big 3, but has potential to be part of a new Big Four...or at least it is better than anything since the Big 3. However, I think there is a couple of things going on here that may be altering the judgement.

First, we are basking in the glow of a new album. And one that seems to be a nice rebound from more than a decade of disappointment in the band's studio efforts. But in a "honeymoon period" nonetheless.

Secondly, and the point of the post, is that I think the sum of this album's parts may be better than the individual songs. Not saying this is a bad thing, because I love that there is not one song on this album that I want to skip. But specifically, does the best of AFTW match up--are there any songs on this album that can crack the top 5 on any of the Big 3? For me, I don't think so...wondering if you guys feel differently. Still love AFTW, this just speaks to the quality of their older material.

For example, IMO, nothing better on AFTW than than:
UTTAD: Ants, Nancies, Typical, Warehouse, BOWA
Crash: Two Step, #41, Billies, Say Bye, LIOG
BTCS: Rapunzel, Last Stop, Stone, Pig, Dreaming Tree

And feel free to choose different top 5 songs...I am sure you all have varying opinions on those.

I think it's too soon to say for sure, but probably not. Most people who are putting AFTW ahead of any of the Big 3 seem to be dropping Crash, but looking at the five songs you posted from that album there's no way those songs are getting bested by AFTW.

And look at BTCS no way. Untouchable.

Snow Outside is for sure in my top 10 (maybe even top 5) favorite dMb songs of all time. It's hard for me to think of a song on any of the Big 3 that i like "better" than this song.

I think a few of the songs from AFTW can easily be on par with some of the Big 3 stuff, however, I would say my Top 3 songs still come from Big 3 albums.

The end of Drunken Soldier is the first thing on this record that made me go "woah." But I'm not hearing anything on the level of say "41" or "Stone".

No way. The best songs on UTTAD and Crash are classics that even casual DMB fans know and love, and BTCS is a masterpiece of songwriting, arrangement and production. Away From the World is very good, but it's not a masterpiece, and at this point in its career, DMB simply can't create classics like the songs on the first two studio albums. Even Belly Belly Nice, which is the most old-school-sounding song DMB has written since Grey Street, will never have the level of mainstream popularity and radio success that songs like Ants Marching and Too Much did, simply because times are different.

    BTCS No

    As for Crash and UTTAD:

Broken Things and maybe The Riff

Re: Do any AFTW songs crack your top 5 on any of the Big 3 albums?

Ok, following the example in the OP (listing based on album versions only for a fair comparison)

UTTAD: BOWA, WWYS, Typical, Nancies, Warehouse
Crash: #41, Crash Into Me, DIDO, Billies, Too Much
BTCS: Rapunzel, Crush, Dreaming Tree, Pig, The Stone

From these, I'd say that album to album, Snow Outside easily beats 3 out of 5 on Crash (all but #41 and Crash Into Me), and maybe one or two on UTTAD. I think the Crush>DT> Pig run is unbeatable, but Snow Outside might edge out Rapunzel on BTCS.

Rooftop, Drunken Soldier, and Broken Things have the possibility to crack into the top 5 with Crash and Maybe UTTAD, but BTCS would not change, as of now.

A lot of this is comparing apples to oranges for me, because the songs are all very different. In a few cases it might come down to what style of song I like better. Also, I don't have as powerful of an attachment to Crash that many of you seem to. I stand by my opinion that, from my perspective, AFTW is even with Crash, if not a little better. Again this is album to album, and not necessarily songs to songs.

Also, rather than give blanket statements, actually list your fav 5 from each album so both you and we know what songs you are comparing. Blanket statements don't lead to good discussion....

Ok, so what are the other 4 choices from each of those albums? Do any of the new songs stack up to them???

I would say, for me, these new songs might start to compete with Big Whiskey, but don't touch anything on the first 3 record.

I think "LITHOG" and "Squirm" are significantly better than anything on the new record.

Zero AFTW songs crack my top 5 DMB albums.

There's probably some that'd be in the top BW 5, easily.

Re: Do any AFTW songs crack your top 5 on any of the Big 3 albums?

There's a good chance that I'd consider one song or even two off of AFTW to crack within the top 5 off of Crash.

I'd say the best of AFTW could surpass Too Much, So Much To Say, Proudest Monkey, and even Say Goodbye. At the moment, a couple new tunes definitely surpass SMTS and Too Much. Obviously songs like Two Step, LIOG, Billies are just DMB classics, but I could see Drunken Soldier, Broken Things, Snow Outside, and Belly Belly Nice to compete with a number of songs off of Crash, and one or two songs off of UTTAD.

To answer the top 5 songs from each album question - I don't know yet. It'll take years to really answer that, because a decade after first hearing this band, my top 5 songs from each album are still changing.

I'd take the top 5 from the "Big 3" + Busted Stuff over anything from this album.

Not to say this is a bad album, but I can only see it cracking the top 5 of Stand Up and Big Whiskey...and probably Everyday.

It's a bit early to tell isn't it? I mean, you're comparing songs that have only just seen the light of day (studio wise) with songs that many of us here have great memories and great life moments associated with.

The reason we love the 'classic' tunes is because they touched us then. We associate those tunes with good memories. Maybe jamming them while with friends or a first love or whatever. When we hear those tunes there is a nostalgia factor there that the new tunes simply cannot replicate yet.

    Agree with this!

    UTTAD:
BOWA, R&R, DN, Warehouse, Jimi Thing

    Crash:
#41, Two Step, Billies, SMTS, PM

    BTCS:
DDTW, Crush, Pig, The Dreaming Tree, Spoon

    AFTW:
Broken Things, Gaucho, The Riff, Snow Outside and Drunken Soldier

IMO, any of those 5 songs from AFTW could compete.

We're obviously talking about initial impressions. You could just as easily say "give it time" to the folks saying that "Rooftop" or "Drunken Soldier" are the best songs ever in the history of ever. There is not a right or wrong answer.

Old DMB is timeless, so no I would not replace the 5 best from the big 3 albums with any AFTW tunes. Having said that, I think the following are easily big 3 quality songs.

    Broken Things
    Sweet
    Drunken Soldier
    The Riff
    Snow Outside
