Away From The World or Big Whiskey?

The new album has been out for a week. How do you think it stands up to the last one? If you were stranded on a desert island and you could only have one or the other in your music collection for all time, which would it be?

I'm not a huge fan of either but I'll take bwggk. Both have some good songs with lots of filler. More songs on bwggk I'd rather hear. It's close though.

Re: Away From The World or Big Whiskey?

I was struggling with this decision. So I decided to rank each track on the two albums individually to help myself out a little bit. Here we go:

    1. Snow Outside
    2. Lying In The Hands of God
    3. Drunken Soldier
    4. Baby Blue
    5. Rooftop
    6. Broken Things
    7. Squirm
    8. Mercy
    9. The Riff
    10. Sweet
    11. Why I Am
    12. Seven
    13. Belly Full
    14. Grux/SMLAM
    15. Time Bomb
    16. If Only
    17. Dive In
    18. Spaceman
    19. You & Me
    20. Belly Belly Nice
    20. Gaucho
    21. Alligator Pie
    23. Funny The Way It Is

The verdict: 7 AWFTW tunes in the top 10, 7 BW tunes in the bottom 10 for me. I enjoy both, but I have to give the slight edge to AWFTW.

It's taken quite a few listens to finally get into AFTW. So far, I am now finally starting to love the album.

However, BWGK still seems to be better. Maybe it was because of Roi still being in the mix. I still consider BWGK as part of a "Big 4", though people laugh, mock, argue, or dismiss when I say that.

AFTW started low but is currently climbing high, but not sure if it will reach the greatness of UTTAD, Crash, BTCS, and BWGK. Only time will tell.

    Whiskey has:

    Squirm
    LITHOG
    Baby Blue

    AFTW has:
    Snow Outside
    Drunken Soldier
    Belly Belly Nice
    Broken Things
    The Riff
    Sweet
    Rooftop

AFTW wins easily for me and I like BW.

Still too early to tell. I think there's more heart and emotional depth to BW, but the music and production is far better on AWTW. I wish more and more that they could've done BW with Lillywhite. That album might've been damn near perfect with his touch and input on the arrangements. While I really enjoy the music of AFTW, I just don't connect with it on a more emotional level as there's just not a lot of interesting stuff happening lyrically, so I really don't know how this album will hold up over time. Already I find myself gravitating to the standout songs and skipping many others. Not necessarily a great sign for long life.

I'll get back to you in a year, but my guts telling me that I'm going to appreciate BW a bit more for what it meant as an album.

Squirm, LITHOG, and a couple others are just decent. AFTW has some really great songs.

I think Roi not dying would have made BW damn near perfect. Cavallo got handcuffed when out of respect, they didn't add new horns. Plus, obviously Roi got to finish nothing he started. Dave indicated how much Cavallo and Roi hit it off, and BW would have been absolutely slammed with horns I think. But, of course I also understand the band taking this approach out of respect, and I think they made the best album they could. Cavallo was the perfect choice to have them get their balls back, regardless of how I don't like his approach to guitar tone or the thickness of some of the guitar tracks.

He seemed to understand the band needed to learn how to fundamentally make a great song again, and focused on that above all else. He's a great producer, and I really would have loved to see what happened to BW without the tragedy, as I'm sure we all do.

Basically the same. They've been swapping the 4 and 5 spot for me pretty often.

With Roi dying, I really think that DMB went out of their way to make the best album ever. That was really a driving force. Frankly, I don't think they had the same drive for greatness on this record. I'm not saying they succeeded or not with BW (I think they succeeded far more than they failed but that's up for debate for everyone). AFTW was a very well crafted record, but it feels like an album by a band that made a record more because they had to than that they wanted to.

Agreed for the most part, but I think they were ready to try and make their best album ever with him alive, as they bounced back from almost breaking up, and he was such a driving force. His hand in arrangements just can never be replaced, and of course literally not being able to record as much sax as they wanted to ultimately hurts a record because it is such a signature part of their sound.

It most certainly is. I judge actual albums based on if I can listen to them straight through and how well they flow from song to song. The only album that delivers better than AFTW in those departments is BTCS.

Album flow is certainly something I consider but much behind the quality of the actual songs. Even if album flow and ability to listen straight through was my basis for a good album aftw would still be near the bottom of the pile. It doesn't match up with uttd or crash in any respect imo. Agree to disagree I suppose. I find that insane.

AFTW due to the production of the record, sounds incredible! BWGGK is too rock driven now that I think about it.
