About the same to me. Pretty interchangeable.

Also, I get sick of the OMGzzzz let's have a hissy fit and fling meaningless insults over the internet and say shit that wouldn't be said face to face just because someone genuinly likes a later album better than many earlier albums.

I love people like you that actually let themselves enjoy later DMB music because it actually is that good.

And I agree COMPLETELY with your top 2 albums. BTCS is my favorite (as is the favorite of many people) and AFTW is my 2nd favorite DMB album also. I can see myself listening to it over and over again for years to come. And while I like the BS songs better, the album mix/feel is off, so I enjoy AFTW more. And Shotgun (post 2000) is one of my favorite DMB songs ever and I like the 2012 versions best.

I'm not saying they succeeded or not with BW (I think they succeeded far more than they failed but that's up for debate for everyone). AFTW was a very well crafted record, but it feels like an album by a band that made a record more because they had to than that they wanted to.
I agree with everything but the bolded. There may have been less of a driving force behind AFTW, but if the Dave and the band were simply going through the motions, then they would have just followed through on the original idea of making a record of unreleased songs (which I still hope they do someday). But Dave decided to push things forward and write new songs. So I think they very much wanted to make this, but they were not out to make their best ever, if that makes sense.

Wow, I find Squirm to be an epic and amazing song, and one of DMB's best.

I completely agree with you, it just baffles my mind when people pick out "Squirm" out of all songs to single out as disliking off from BW. Definitely top 3 on that album to me. I'm just as surprised when people don't get "The Riff", as it's my favorite off AFTW (for now) .

The Riff was one of my least favorites off the album during the first couple of listens. Now it's my second favorite.

Also, I have this amazing music video idea in my head that I play out every time I hear the Riff. I so wish DMB would let me film it.

BW is fun and was important considering where the band was at the time, but it's way too loud and has inferior flow. It's a good record, and has a few choice cuts, but AFTW is better. Even with some of the lyrical abortions. And as for the guys who like AFTW better than UTTAD and Crash, you can have opinions and whatnot, but I'd love to hear them in about a year or so when AFTW can really be analyzed in comparison to something DMB put out so long ago and has road tested, etc

I love Big Whiskey. It is an excellent album and it sounded like Dave Matthews Band again (I consider everything after BTCS until BW the lost years...some good songs here and there but no good albums). However, AFTW (in my opinion), is much much much much better. The reason being= full band inclusion.

Sadly, I have to agree. This album is putting me to sleep as we speak. I can't say I am excited to hear any of these songs in an upcoming tour. I think the band is lacking creativity at this point in time. Maybe the year off did more harm than good.

This isn't part of a "Big 4" or anything, but I think it's a significantly better record than Everyday, Stand Up, and Big Whiskey.

I did a little experiment and didn't listen to it for over a week to make sure I wasn't just letting myself be convinced by the "freshness," and then I listened to Big Whiskey and this back-to-back (I hadn't listened to Big Whiskey in at least two years). This album is so much better than the last one.

The real question should be, if Lillywhite had produced Big Whiskey, which would you have preferred?

This is a pretty irrelevant question, especially since Big Whiskey was heavily reliant on the electric sound that Lillywhite would have discouraged, but it's still interesting to think about.

Another thing: One of my least favorite songs on this album, Gaucho, is better than almost everything on Big Whiskey.

    AFTW wins.

Truth. AFTW is boring me to death. I'm trying, but I can't even listen to it straight through without skipping parts of songs or even entire songs (I'm looking at you Gaucho! Kids singing, really?) I can listen to BW all the way through with ease.

I just don't get the love for this album. The entire album is full of mood killers live and I think in 5 years the set list watchers will be moaning and groaning every time the see a AFTW song pop up. Boring album!!

Just the songs as they are in the studio, definitely AFTW. As a cohesive record, definitely AFTW. Time will tell if the live performances of the best AFTW songs (Snow Outside, Rooftop, etc) are as good as Lying in the Hands of God is live, though.

I agree with this. Live LITHOG is amazing (thanks Jeff). I do think that, from the way it sounded in the 2-3 performances they played, that Snow Outside could easily be as great, if not as epic (-ly long). For that, Drunken Soldier is probably the best bet.

LITHOG is great but it's wayyy too long. That song should be 8-9 minutes, maybe 10. NOT 14-15.

I will have to listen to it again as a whole. It's been a while. I honestly never listen to any of the studio albums because I much prefer the band live. Since AFTW came out, I've listened to both BTCS and UTTAD again out of curiosity and I just didn't enjoy it at all. I love the songs as they are today and it just wasn't pleasing to the ears to listen to them in their immature state. A lot of the songs just felt clunky to me. This band is truly like fine wine! I'm curious to see if I have the same reaction to the other albums if I ever get around to giving them a listen again...

I will never understand how someone can like Whiskey more than AFTW. Even if I take the one song I like the least off of BW, AFTW still wins big.

This is a way more valid comparison than Busted Stuff. I like both but I'll take AFTW.
