I'll take Seven over If Only and Why I Am over Gaucho...currently. Snow Outside and Baby Blue should be a bit closer, although here is where a straight chronological song-by-song comparison can be kind of funny. Would be better compared to Belly Full. But I will take Rooftop over Time Bomb by a gigantic margin. AFTW has better consistency too. And the bright spots on AFTW shine way more than Whiskey's IMO. Obviously ASTW's production is superior.

I listen to DMB on my commutes. I find most of AFTW boring enough to make me sleepy. The songs don't seem to have any hooks or grooves, and the lyrics and wordplay aren't very good. I've listened to the the whole album thru maybe a dozen times, heard 5 of the songs live in person, and some of the live recordings on youtube. I think only 2 or 3 songs will make my permanent playlist.

OTOH, I love BW all the way through because it keeps my awake and alert when I'm driving.

Quiet, mellow music can be great too. Just sayin.

But, of course I also understand the band taking this approach out of respect, and I think they made the best album they could. Cavallo was the perfect choice to have them get their balls back, regardless of how I don't like his approach to guitar tone or the thickness of some of the guitar tracks.

He seemed to understand the band needed to learn how to fundamentally make a great song again, and focused on that above all else. He's a great producer, and I really would have loved to see what happened to BW without the tragedy, as I'm sure we all do.
    Correct on all accounts.

They're both bottom-tier albums. Probably AFTW, though.

Re: Away From The World or Big Whiskey?

obviously everyone has their own opinions. i find some of the reasoning behind some tto be interesting.

listening to all the bands albums, knowing what they became famous for as their "sound", i find it surprising what some elieve to be their sound and not their sound. that doesn't touch on which is the better album, just which one sounds more like the band that everyone loves from those "big 3" days.

BW is a heavy album with electric guitar driven songs. that isn't the sound i became attached to from them. AFTW has a polar opposite base sound. Even having tim more involved in the overall sound than the big 3 days, having him on the acoustic keeps the sound more similar to the big 3. looking at the other players, they are much more present in AFTW. i think they are placed, utilized and highlighted very well in AFTW. In BW, they grab very few spots. So many intricacies on AFTW, where BW has so much brashness (and that has a place, the albmu has a lot of great moments and a bunch of good songs)

Overall,it's not close. AFTW is superior in all regards to me. i think the album sounds like DMB to me. the dmb of old. I love the album.

breaking down the songs...this list is in no order, just what i consider the best songs the band has released. not the short list. but the more inclusive, these are all great songs, list. here are the songs off both that i would include

    LITHOG
    Broken things
    Riff
    Snow Outside
Drunken Soldiers. (best song on album. best song written since bartender)

i haven't really enjoyed listening to any albums straight thru since the big 3. NONE. i am really enjoying that with AFTW.

i think the conversation of which albums flow? while i like listening to AFTW straight thru, i don't think that is what makes an album great. it's a nice thing, but i think that typically reflects the overall strength of an album. that's what makes BTCS so good. great songs beginning to end. the band put fillers in between songs because they hated the flow of the album. the fans loved the album because the songs are great. and they are all followed by another great song. that's why it flows!

They are both equal. A new era of DMB. Big Whiskey is the dark side, AFTW is the light side. I know they were both written at different times, but could easily be a double album in my opinion.

They both have moments of brilliance and moments of doubt. But they are both great albums. I don't really know any bands that sound similar to what they are doing in the studio. These two albums have a ton of originality. Which these days is hard to come by.

Give me Big Whiskey. I'd elect to drop Dive In and You and Me and in turn add Broken Things, Belly Belly Nice, and Rooftop.

AFTW just kills me every time I get to Mercy. I can't stand really listening to the middle of the album. I always have to fast forward to Rooftop after Belly Belly Nice. And I mean I love the slow DMB songs. Just none of the ones on AFTW.

AFTW is much better, but I will say this- LITHOG and SMLAM (yes, SMLAM) are 2 of the best studio cuts DMB has ever put out

I'm not saying they succeeded or not with BW (I think they succeeded far more than they failed but that's up for debate for everyone). AFTW was a very well crafted record, but it feels like an album by a band that made a record more because they had to than that they wanted to.
SO well said. My thoughts exactly. BWGK was such an important album for a number of reasons, and it succeeded brilliantly. It is truly their comeback album. The fact that we're debating the above thread question, instead of "AFTW or SU," speaks to this: we know that both are great, but which of those two would you take. So although, AFTW is not a bad album, it's just missing 2-3 fiery, classic DMB songs to add to the good stuff that's there. BWGK had EVERYTHING in it. Some would say it had a little too much of everything, but that's debatable.

Big Whiskey and AFTW are both studio albums by DMB 2.0, so they have a similar sound in that respect (more horns, electric, etc.), but in terms of tone, I think that the album that AFTW is most similar to is Some Devil. That would be an interesting comparison.

Considering the list begins with #1 -- yes, lowest score "wins" ... I do wonder why some people like "snow outside" so much, my brain is just begging him to turn that into "Round & Round". Oh well, I'll stick to Youtube.

as far as liking "snow outside" so much, and referencing youtube, this is why I think the song is the best on the album. the best anything they have done in a long time.

It's honestly amazing that Big Whiskey works as well as it does given how they had to ultimately put the album together. Though I still feel like what makes Big Whiskey a more emotionally fulfilling album is the heart that Dave put into it to honor Leroi. I wonder on some level if it would've felt more vapid like AFTW if Leroi hadn't passed. And that's not to say that BW was a lyrical masterpiece, don't get me wrong. But I think there was an effort and core passion at the center of that album; it had heart and soul that is clearly lacking from AFTW if you ask me.

I've continually warmed up to AFTW on a musical standpoint, yet now almost a month in, it still means absolutely nothing to me on an emotional level. That's really unfortunate.

Just curious, what songs on BW connect with you on an emotional level?
