I recently started listening to Say Goodbye a lot and I think its the most passionate song Dave ever wrote, even more so than Crush. Just the way he sings it, you can get a sense of pleading for it to happen.

I guess I'm relegated to Oh, I still find it applicable to a degree as a love song, to a grandfather or otherwise. And Granny I agree- "I'm so glad our paths crossed this time today"-- new love.

That and the "I will wait for you, I will wait for no one but you" line. He's willing to pass up everybody else to wait for her to return to him.
And Granny, Dave first played it 2 weeks after he met Ashley, and its about love, so its easy to make the connection between the song and those feelings Dave had when he first met her.
