He said that at DC this year as well, except it was "I just want to fuckin hide". Definitely agree it makes the song even more powerful.

Not sure what the best is (maybe tLWS version) but I do know that the 3.29.03 D&T version reminded me of why I fel in love with the song in the first place.

Live Trax 3 wins for me. The jam is so powerful it's not funny.

    LWS is pretty nice too...

The Gorge from last year is incredible, first show after the funeral, so there were still tons of emotions swirling about.

Re: The best version of Bartender is...

One of my least favorite DMB concerts I've ever been to was in SLC in 2002 during the Winter Olympics. Despite the fact it was effin cold, the band seemed to be catering to the casual fan and played a lot of their singles (which are still good). I think the cold also had an effect on Dave's voice and the overall sound quality of the band

However, the encore was Bartender and Watchtower, and I was knocked clean over by that version of Bartender. Like I said, the sound quality wasn't that great, neither was Dave's voice, but there was just something about that version that got me... especially the pennywhistles at the end. I remember just feeling euphoric... a total eargasm. I don't do drugs, but if I did, I imagine it would feel something like I felt during that version. Still haven't been able to find it anywhere.

Agreed I'm surprised more people aren't talking about it. The other ones mentioned are awesome, but I'm already convinced this is a top 5 Bartender "released".

    4.7.02 lyrics for those following....

    [outro]
    falling in alone
    oh then we fall away
cause someday oh in my dream
    before me there stood God
    there spinning around
    oh and around
    he said there my son
    what are you wanting
    in your life
    i want to believe
    i want to believe
    he said you're there alone
    but I don't believe you're real
    cause you're never there
    never there
    oh i'm never there
oh i want to believe and i
    i want to believe
    don't walk away
    you believe in love
    rain down on my lullaby
    love i'd love to believe
    your belief
    oh there
    you love me
    love right
    i'm right
    you beat up all yeah
    all yeah
    if i'm wrong

    Just listened to 4-7-02

It was a great version, but I wouldn't consider it the best out there. I prefer LT3, LT16, LIVE TRAX 2008, and Folsom better. Or perhaps Hartford '08 when Roi first played Oboe on it,and first time opening a show. Sounded great.

Can't agree that WOTR is equal to tLWS Bartender, and the placement of LT 8. Although I do think LT 8 deserves so much more love, amazing set, mix and just show in general.

I was just gonna list live versions but could not leave tLWS off the list.

WOTR is a very underrated version, IMO!

I think WOTR in general in underrated. But personally I'm not sure if I'd even include that in my top 5 released Bartenders. Butch's long piano solo in the middle kills it for me, so by the time the penny whistle comes in I almost feel as if the song has just been dragging on. This is one of the reasons why Bartender has basically done a 180 degree turn since Tim came on board and Butch left, IMO.

Full band no question 8-19-08 is my favourite version. I also really love the Dave & Tim version from the radio city dvd, and also the Dave solo from The Abbey Road TV show.
