I liked 20, 123, and 163. Looks like interesting light. What focal length were you at, generally? I think I liked 163 best because of the feel of the photo, how they are all waiting for the next wave to come in.

Surfing...in January. Umm yeah, our high temperature today was 3 degrees, literally. Don't you know it's not fair to talk about the beach in January?

Thanks! I'm not sure what focal length these tend to be, but the lens was the Nikon 55-200mm on a crop sensor... I work the focal length to frame the shot, so it moves frequently... after looking, most metadata says that it was closer to 200 consistently...

Ben, I grew up in MN... I know you can make a choice to leave if you think it's worth it, but you love MN, don't deny it.

It does get a little tough in the mid-Jan to mid-Feb time frame...

Very true, hence why I live here. My morning is going to consist of making coffee, grabbing my camera, walking out to watch the sunrise/surf at the pier... BUT, it is under 50 here this morning

Eh it is kind of fun blowing the minds of people who live in the south when you tell them how cold it gets here. International Falls made the national news Friday because their low was -46 that morning. On the local news here they televised some weather news clip from North Carolina that was pointing out to their people that their "cold" 46 degrees was still over 80 degrees warmer than International Falls.

Anyway, I don't think I would enjoy not having real seasons anymore (dropping down to the 50's in winter is not a "real" season change, haha). There is still no feeling in the world like the first day in spring that finally feels "warm", like the first day you don't need a jacket after the winter.

The high was ONLY going to be 79.

Last post about weather, but I read an article last week in USA Today about what temps schools around the country prevent kids in school from going out for recess. It was hilarious that a bunch of schools from Maryland south would keep kids from going out for recess whenever it gets below 40 or if there is snow. Then they asked a school in International Falls in Minnesota and they said the kids go outside no matter what until it gets to -15. The principal said that when it gets to -20 it gets "iffy".

Alright, back to photography now. When in the hell is the new Nikon 85mm f/1.4 going to be in stock?! I've been watching for it to be in stock (at a respectable place) for like 2 months. Grrr.

I have a buddy who just purchased an older version of the 85mm f/1.8 from someone who was given it and not interested for $25. I flipped a lid, I've had that lens on my list for months but don't plan on spending any coin on new lenses for a while... I was really hoping he had no use for it so he'd sell it to me for $100 or so, but no dice. He did say I can use it whenever though... So next time I'm doing some portraits I'll definitely borrow it.

Toss up between the 50mm f/1.4 and the 24-70mm f/2.8. It would depend on my mood and what I plan to shoot. If I was in doubt, it would be the 24-70 just because it's more versatile. If I wanted something light, it would be the 50mm.

I do have this one...and frequently use it. Works great on my 2 year old.

...this is why I don't like only having the 50mm. I find myself moving all over the place to get the right frame. I'll look into the 24-70. Thanks guys.

Side note: what do you think of the Nikon 18-200mm VR's? I think it's 3.5-5.5ish. Too wide of a range seems to affect the F stop. Right?

Ben has been doing a smart thing of investing in Nikon's pro level glass because it keeps it's value... He'll be able to sell it all if he ever needs to get rid of it, and he'll probably get most of his money back.

I've heard great things about the 18-200mm...
    http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-200mm-ii.htm

If you're looking to have the entire range covered, that is a good choice, or the 28-300 new one...
    http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/28-300mm.htm

Personally, I really prefer the foot movement required when walking around with just a prime lens. It reminds me to think about composition, and to work the scene until I get something that I like.

Sorry, I was just saying what I personally use. I guess I wasn't really looking at it in terms of a recommendation (although if you have the means and like zooms, then you'll probably never regret getting the 24-70).

For the budget, I'd definitely go for primes. Get like the cheaper 35mm available and then either the 50mm f/1.8 or 85mm f/1.8. For just walking around, especially while traveling where weight of the lens makes a huge difference in how much "fun" you have, then primes are great!

My wife and I are hoping to someday take a trip to europe and just this morning I was trying to imagine what camera equipment I would bring. I think I decided I would have the most fun using just 3 lenses: 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.4, and the 85mm f/1.4. Maybe substitute the 35mm with something wider. You can't beat the optics and versatility of the 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200, but for traveling/walk-around they are a little impractical.

I totally agree. I used both the 50mm and the 24-70mm in Seattle last summer as "walk-around" lenses and while I love the images I got with the 24-70mm, I had more "fun" with the 50mm. Like Matt said, prime lenses made me focus more on composition and the fact that the 50mm is so much lighter and so much less conspicuous (people tend to stare at you when you're walking around with lenses like the 24-70mm because they are so large) made it just more enjoyable to use. Again, the 50mm isn't for everything, like a landscape type picture, but it's good for most things that are immediately in front of you.

    Thanks for the post Benny.

I agree on the 50mm. I've got that lens already and love it.

Maybe I'll look into the 85mm and 35mm as well.

Well I finally broke down and placed an order for the new Nikon 85mm f/1.4. Since it's never in stock anywhere (and hasn't been since it was "released" last Fall) I just placed the order at Adorama and they will ship it whenever they get it in stock. I like that they don't charge you until it ships, which is why I chose them since this thing probably won't ship until March if I'm lucky. Supposedly I'm taking some pictures at a wedding in May for a family friend, so I'm hoping I have it by then.

Anyway, the reviews of this lens were just too much for me to ignore anymore. I'm really looking forward to adding another prime lens to my setup.

^ There is a 85mm f1.4 on the Minneapolis Craigslist right now for $850. Price seems pretty firm.

Thanks, but Nikon came out with a new one a few months ago. That's the one I was talking about. Basically it's never in stock at any reputable place because Nikon can't make them fast enough essentially.

The previous version was introduced around 15 years ago. The new one is much sharper from what I've read from corner to corner even wide open and it has current features like manual focus on-the-fly when needed as well as the Nano coating to reduce flare. I figure when I buy lenses, I don't want to get a desire to replace them with something newer for as long as possible. If this new lens is anything like the old one, then I'll know I'll be using the best Nikon 85mm lens available for the next 15 years or so. Plus, if I should decide to sell it, I'll be able to get most of that money back.

So I shot the 85mm 1.8 a little over the weekend and I like it. I like the length it gets me with a crop sensor camera. Creates breathing room when taking portraits, which helps the subject feel comfortable.

I also did a bunch of catching up on my image of the day project since I have fixed my computer. If you want to look, here's some recent stuff...

I shot some maternity photos for a friend's wife, and I think they turned out okay...

I've updated the Image of the Day Project, so if you want to look through them, you can look here...

I really like your image of the day pictures. Can definitely tell if you are going for color/tone, B&W, or moood when you take the exposure. Of the 10 on there I think I like the airport one best. Spent lots of time at the airport! Guess it reminds me of that.

I like the maternity ones too, especially the silhouette/sunset. One thing I noticed on DSC_0054-2 that I would recommend for next time, with profile shots, have the subject move their eyes towards camera slightly while keeping chin perpendicular to it. It helps keep the eyes from being too white, so you can see a bit more of the iris/pupil. I think you were trying to go for the compositional effect that she was looking back at her husband, but I think you would still accomplish that with her eyes looking more flattering, for lack of a better word. Not trying to be critical, I think the shots are good, just something I saw on a video that you might try next time to see what you like best.

Here are some maternity shots I took for friends last spring, it is a difficult shoot, for sure.

Might give ideas on some more poses?
