Re: The 2014 Major League Baseball Season
if we're going to go back to Ryan Howard, my thoughts from Day 1 were to sign him after that monster 06 season (or even after 07) to a 6 yr $150mm deal...avoid arbitration all together, give him a fat fucking paycheck for a 2nd yr player who made just $355k the year before, and guess what? When he's 32 or 33 and coming down, he's out of your hair
Ryan Braun, Evan Longoria...those guys were signed very early, avoiding FA (and arbitration? not sure)...lock em up young. It doesnt mean you're going to get a discount later, but it might mean you're not over paying for a 35 yr old
Trout is a special case because he'll hit the FA market so damn young. Most guys hit it around 28, 29. This is a case where you have to look down the road a bit. If you pay him the minimum now, will that effect your chances of signing him later? If I'm Trout, and I had those 2 seasons and you're still gonna pay me the minimum, well go fuck yourself Angels when you want to resign me.
If the Angels can make him happy by giving him several hundred thousand $ more than they have to, maybe he'll remember that later. Maybe he won't, but he won't have a reason to be mad at them when it comes to the FA table
