Way too tired to read any of that though. But yes, guys definitely get put on the "friend" ladder vs the "dating" later after a period of time, and more importantly, after certain experiences with that person.
Hopping from one ladder to the next could be almost impossible in some situations, because you've already identified your relationship to one other, and admitted this "place" to one another. Usually it's that a guy bitched out early on, didn't hit on her, and now is seen as not really worth the time anyway. Your fates are already set, no real sexual attraction to be had for her.
You might get a fluke bang session in if you're very lucky, but you will never be dating. And there will never be interest in dating, in those situations.
