Like Budget-O's? This Thread May Be For You!

I don't want to make a sweeping generalization of the current Ants populous, but if you are like many people around the world, you are always looking for ways to save money without seeming like a tight-wad.

So this is the thread for any money savings tips you would like to share with others. I included my personal savings estimations if I were to employ these tactics. I encourage you to do the same!

Here are 5 quick ones off the top of my head:

1. Drive slower--$219 dollars. Lowering my highway speed from 75 to 65 will increase my fuel efficiency for 12% or so for my highway mileage. Factoring in a reasonable, albeit slightly optimistic avg gasoline price of 3.15/gallon, I'll definitely save some money.

2. Lower thermostat by 4 degrees--$48. This estimation is based upon current heating bills for winter months only.

3. Switch from brand-name cereal to budget brands--$28. This will be tough to do, the drop-off in quality is enormous in my opinion.

4. Use my dryer sheets twice over--$2. I didn't think that was alot at first, then I calculated that, if I put $2 in a money market account that averages 5% a year, in 25 years it will be worth $6.77. Can't beat that!

5. Taking powdered drink mix to restaurants to mix with water rather than paying for a soda/juice--$100. The savings will be tougher to accumulate here, simply because I more often than not drink beer when out to eat. Unless they come up with some sort of beer powder mix, I'll have to settle for roughly $100 (40 restaurant visits @2.50/soda).

So if I employ all of these strategies I will save myself $397 over the course of the next year!

I can't wait to hear your tips!!!!!!

Have you ever actually purchased budget brand cereal? It comes in a massive plastic bag like it's homeless. I feel bad for it on the shelf.

Admittedly I have not. I would probably do the powdered mix thing before I resorted to switching to Krusty-O's to save $28/yr.

Or you could just drink water and save even more money by not buying "powder".

Hey now, this isn't the place to rip on other people's savings strategies.

Besides, the cost in powder would only be about $8/yr for my consumption rate, and was already factored into the savings estimates.

Re: Like Budget-O's? This Thread May Be For You!

Here are the five best ways I have found to save money.

    1. Use coupons. If you're the grocery shopper in your home, find a grocery store that will double or triple coupons. Sign up for their frequent customer program to take advantage of their sales. After you do this, become very diligent about clipping coupons. You can use smartsource or coupons.com to find some if you don't get Sunday fliers. Also go to the websites of the products you purchase most often to see if they have special offers. All of this requires (usually) entering your e-mail address. Create a bogus e-mail address for the coupons and website subscriptions.

    2. Always shop around. This should seem like a no brainer but I constantly hear of people who buy something that they planned to buy at their store of 'preference' rather than price checking everywhere else.

    3. Buy toiletries in bulk. Who cares if you have 48 rolls of toilet paper? You will use them all. Why not buy the gallon of shampoo? You can always store what you need in the bathroom in a smaller bottle you already own.

    4. Save your change. My boyfriend and I do this. Last year in February we started paying cash for all of our day-to-day purchases and saving the change. We had, collectively, $1000 by October for our trip to Italy. Most of our spending money came from change that we honestly didn't miss having in our pockets.

    5. Use a sponge or a towel. It might seem like a small thing, but grabbing for a towel that you can later wash to wipe something saves money compared to balling up 2-3 paper towels to do the same job. The paper towels are a waste.

Well said. If I saved $400 with these strategies and gave $300 away to friends/charities, would I be considered frugal then?

Oh jeez, calm down. I was being sarcastic because of his "frugal" comment.

to the best of my knowledge, there isn't. I just didn't want the Simpson's reference to go unrecognized.

There was. BRIEFLY. I have two boxes myself but they are keepsakes. They sold them @ 7-11's to promote The Simpsons Movie last summer. You can pick up a box for relatively cheap, but I'm not sure how much longer they will be edible! More of a collector's item really.

I have a kegerator which does save quite a bit of money on beer. I would suggest anyone who drinks a copious amount of beer to invest in one. Depending on the beer you buy it pays for itself extremely quickly.

I try to be a huge energy saver as well. Don't leave tv's/computers on and only use cold water on laundry as well as using the air dry cycle on your dishwasher I have found saves a couple bucks. Now if my roommate started doing these things it would help out quite a bit.

And if you haven't already, replace your light bulbs with the most energy efficient ones available...

I like most ideas. Don't like the dryer sheets or the powder tho.

Instead of using them twice you could just not use dryer sheets...

Or use those balls that you pop in the dryer...
