Naive DMB Opinions You Once Held

When you first became a fan, what were some naive opinions you had? One of my biggest ones was that I thought Seek Up was a track they just added to R2T to take up space, !

I was young, and it was way above my head.

I can’t have fun at a show if the setlist is subpar.

When I first went to a show I thought all the smoke at shows was just cigs. I was 7 and 8 years old. Then I went to a show agian around 14 or 15 in the 9th grade and quickly realized all that smoke is weed

Yeah I was a young and a dumb ass 9th grader that thought getting drunk at shows was the thing to do and had no idea the vast majority of people smoke pot as well.

When I first became a fan, I would always skip the studio version of The Stone because I thought the beginning was weird. Big mistake

For like the first year or more I was obsessed with '93. That's what turned me from a fan to an obsessed freak lol. I dug up all the shows and tapes I could find from the 91-93 era. All those improv jams, and unreleased tracks. Dave's insane voice, and all that. Songs like Blue Water, Minarets, Seek Up, Warehouse, Nancies, Help Myself, early versions of Two Step, etc. made me realize that Dave Matthews Band was fucking weird, and they were way more than "Crash Into Me." Eventually I got into Before These Crowded Streets and inevitably the LWS, and that lead to more and more. Now that I've listened to it all extensively, I'd say the 98'-04 era is the best period. But I still love that early era, and go back and listen, but only when I'm in the mood.

But I remember for the longest time I'd argue with my brother that Remember Two Things was their best album, and he swore it was BTCS (He even has a BTCS tattoo, and clearly, BTCS is the correct answer )

Also, 93 is my birth year

No, but listening only to early DMB is pretty silly. I was missing out on a bunch of good material.

I used to think their early live performances (91-97) were unlistenable, mostly due to Dave's undeveloped voice.

the other way round. surely. very creative, extremely sensitive to when is good to play a riff, and when is good to play root notes etc. Technique is good but nothing like that of a 'great'. But perfect for the band because he's so creative and sensitive to what fits where, and when
