Re: need computer help!

I'm ashamed to say it was the monitor.

The computer wasn't booting but that was bc it was waiting for a prompt

Any suggestions on wireless routers? The one I'm renting from Comcast is awful. It pulses in and out. My cable speed is 75Mbs but I may increase that if I get another TV.

I need recs on a decent laptop under $500.... saw this one on Newegg:

    http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=34-232-795

Can anybody tell me if that's a decent system at that price point?

Unless you plan on doing any hardcore gaming, that one is a buy. It'll run some games, but not a lot of the new stuff (ie Fallout 4).

Holy shit. I have that exact one sitting in my Amazon cart. I just haven't been able to pull the trigger on it.

Just snagged it on Newegg for $446.49 after getting $23.50 off using a promo code and going the free shipping route.

I think $446.49 is a really decent price for that machine. Read reviews online and ran it past a couple of techie buddies who seemed to be in agreement that it's a good buy.

Last new computer I got was for Christmas in '08 so I'm excited for some new tech.

Either MBLNOV2615 (5%) or VCOBF15 ($25). The one for $25 comes out to $1.50 more than 5% on the list price.

The former I think you needed to be a member of some website in order to be able to redeem it, and the latter you simply had to use a VISA to purchase it.

Problem is that when I went to redeem the VISA one the website kept telling me there was a problem. I was definitely using a VISA too. So I had to use the one for $1.50 less. Not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things.

Every time I click on my cart, i get an error 404. Tried it on computer, phone browser and phone app. No matter what i do, I can't get to my cart to pay. Been trying to two hours.

I guess Newegg doesn't want my money.

5th gen i7 proc, 8GB RAM, no gaming? Oh yeah, that Asus should be blistering fast for everything else, great price.
You will be in awe of just how quickly it responds to everything else you'll do outside of hardcore gaming/video editing.

We had just the modem. I swapped it out for this

Modem receives the webz and provides them to the router. Router sends out the wireless signal and creates the network.

Is the AMD A-10 significantly slower than the i7? There's a laptop on newegg now for $399 that has the same specs as that one, with the only difference being it has a A-10 7400p processor as opposed to the i7.

i7 is prob more powerful, but I wouldn't say it's a significant difference, my laptop has an A10 and it runs just about anything well

That's right. I remember a few years back I had a separate modem and router. The piece I'm renting is both, so I'll be looking for one that's combined as well.

Doesn't appear to be a big difference if all else is similar.

Cool, cool. I really don't need it to do much, as I don't game or edit media, so I'm hoping the difference for regular stuff is negligible.

That's the exact page I was looking at, but don't have the tech knowledge to know exactly what they were talking about on each point. Gist I got was they were comparable, with the AMD being more power hungry. I don't care about yearly spending on my electric bill, I just want enough battery life to watch a movie on a plane (which is pretty much the only place I'd use it where I wouldn't have access to an outlet) and I think it will let me do that; so I can live with that difference.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger.
