Re: Back pain!!

Oh man, fun story on temporary back pain: over the summer we spent a day on the lake, much of it on the wave runners. It was a busy day and I was just getting pounded by waves and rode way longer than I should have. By late afternoon I couldn't walk upright. I think it was the following day, still in pain, I tried some stretching and did something to make it worse. I thought I was stuck on the floor. I eventually made it to the bed but then at some point decided I had to use the bathroom.

I literally could not sit up or drop my legs off the side of the bed. All I could do was slowly slump off the bed stomach down until I was on my knees. Then had to crawl hands and knees to the bathroom. Also sitting on the toilet was torture. Amazingly in the morning my pain was reduced nearly completely and I was better in a few days but that shit was miserable. After that for the rest of the summer, I learned to stretch before riding, take the waves slower and just call it a day if it was too rough

Got a Teeters HangUp inversion table about 10 years ago, use it anytime I feel my lower back tightening up (should use it on a regular basis), haven't had a bad back episode since.

Got the Costco Adjustable bed in August, King size which is really two separate twin beds so wife and I get separate controls, I now sleep on my back in the "zero gravity" position (head and feet raised), no back pain at all in the morning. If I travel and sleep in a regular bed, I wake up with some lower back soreness.

    Re: Back pain!!

Have had back problems for quite a while. Usually I go the Chiro one or two times and I am set and it feels great. Usually lasts several months unless I tweak it somehow. I hurt it however at the start of a 2 week vacation out of the country and could not see the chiro for quite a long time since it happened right at the the start of vacation.

Now I have been back for a 2 and a half weeks and have pretty annoying Sciatic pain. It has never taken this long to "fix". Going to my doctor tomorrow but really have no idea what they will say. Obviously will start trying Yoga when it feels better to strengthen but I think right now when there is still constant sciatic pain it is probably not the best idea. The pain is mainly on my right side and halfway down the leg and it sucks.

Best to start doing stretches....maybe see a physio? Doctor won't be able to do anything.

-Speaking of pain, also lifetime issues, not good today but had been better last couple of months.

Yeah I guess I was hoping the Doctor would maybe be able to do a refereral and maybe give me a prescription for something a little stronger than Aleve. Since I have been taking Aleve now for more than 2 weeks it is basically not really doing anything anymore.

I've got two slipped discs in my lowest two lumbar. Smoking weed always eases that pain.

    Re: Back pain!!

Glad I found this thread. Shared my experience in the weightlifting thread but I'll spill the beans here as well.

I've injured my lower back 3-4 times over the years due to idiotic lifting and sloppy form. Each time the pain would last exactly seven days. I'd see the doc, receive a muscle relaxant, and play vegetable on my bed for the week.

This past July was what finally did me in. I had just spent eight days in paradise (Charleston, SC) and was antsy to hit the weights. I'm a big deadlifter so of course I jumped right into pulling heavy weight off the ground. I don't believe in using a weightlifting belt to deadlift but for whatever reason I wanted to give it try. Second worst decision of my lift. The belt threw off my natural pull and I heard the "snap, crackle, pop" in my spine. The pain wasn't bad at first - more of an annoyance if anything. I stayed away from loading my spine for 3 months. I vacationed to Florida in October and for that entire week, I had zero pain. Once I came back to Illinois, the pain slowly came back. I was able to squat and deadlift again but my spine still made a clicking sound afterwards and didn't feel quite right. I broke down and saw a specialist. An MRI showed that I have a herniated disc, bulging disc, and a tear in my lower lumbar. I received a cortisone shot which relieved the pain and inflammation but it's only a temporary band aid. The next suggestion was an epidural steroid into my spine but I've heard and read horror stories and view that as a band aid as well. I have a list of stretches from PT, I hang from an inversion table that I'm borrowing, I see my chiro (the only one I trust), and have access to a reverse hyper machine to decompress my spine. Some days the pain is better than others. It really depends on what I'm doing. I'm moving to Arizona in less than two weeks so I'm really banking on the warm, dry heat in combination to a change on barometric pressure healing this nonsense. Unfortunately I don't really have any new suggestions other than what has been said - I just wanted to share my two cents. Pain back is awful. No one understands it until they've been down that road.

Fridge moving from IL to AZ could help a ton. Like I've mentioned in the weightlifting thread too, I have chronic knee pain and I've noticed when the weather gets colder the pain gets worse. Now that spring is rolling around the pain is less frequent. Definitely a different beast but in the same light. Hoping things get better for you. Don't hurt yourself moving.

I had spinal surgery on October 9th. I had a fusion/fixation with screws and a bone graft done at l5/s1. I just went back to work last Monday. I am sore but that's expected. I am experiencing less numbness in my right foot and am no longer in back "pain" . I put my family through a lot but it was worth it.
Almost 6 months out and I feel great. I somehow managed to survive a brutal winter here in Ct. I am sometimes sore but overall feel great and I am so happy I finally had the surgery. It has changed my life and made things better for me and my family. I am, obviously, a lot more fun to be around for my wife and kids since I am out daily, chronic, debilitating pain.

For anyone taking meds, I always got the perc's with no acetaminophen, they were 5 or 10 oxycodines or something But no Tylenol.

Point is, the Vicodins for and some other of the meds can have a ton of it and if I did not want to take 750 or 1000mgs every time I too the medecine. I read it's not good for your liver.

Pharmacist here. Actually, last year the fda made all manufacturers change the maximum amount of Tylenol in a Vicodin or Percocet to be 325. So the most hydrocodone or oxycodone combination pill with acetaminophen could be is 325mg. Therefore, you should be taking a safer amount of acetaminophen for your liver unless abusing it, which, of course, many do.

That said, I am usually in favor of using plain Oxycodone (no plain hydrocodone (Vicodin). You could always then supplement in between doses with plain otc Tylenol if need be.

Results of MRI were pinched nerve and herniated disc.

Orthopedic doctor is recommending physical therapy for now. We will see how that works.

Tweaked something in a bad place yesterday morning and the last 24 hours have been rather awful. On Vicodin and Gabapentin right now.

Hoping it will get better with physical therapy but if not will do surgery I guess.

I've had a bad back most my life, and being a desk jockey now sure doesn't help things. What I've found to be most effective over the years is strengthening the glutes. Google some basic exercises. If those things start misfiring, the lower back and just about everything takes on the load. I hope things work out, back pain sucks.

    Re: Back pain!!

Been laid up in bed since Thursday afternoon. I was cleaning my apartment Thursday morning, bent down to get something from under the sink and felt a sharp pain that shot down my leg. Knew it was a disc the second it happened as I'd already herniated a disc before. I still went into work that afternoon, which was probably pretty stupid but it was my first day at my new job so I didn't want to call out. Saw a spine specialist yesterday and he's almost positive it's another herniation. MRI coming Monday, I'm really hoping its a new disc and not the same one I had operated on 5 years ago. Doctor said they can do one more discectomy on the same disc, but if it herniates a third time then they'll have to remove the disc and fuse the two vertebrae together, which is a major operation. But, if it's a different one, then there's a better chance of it healing with rest and PT.

I'm 25 and feel like I'm 55 with this back. I feel like it's going to be a problem the rest of my life . At least I have some strong muscle relaxers and oxys for the time being, makes it a little better. Sucks that this is happening right after I graduated law school and was really going to make an effort to start running again and getting into good shape.

Interesting....I looked a bit online about this and did not see favorable results.

Personally I have been doing physical therapy for the last 2 months and back is feeling better.

Care to elaborate on what "science experiments" you're talking about? If you're referring to that little thing called "modern medicine", well,

Also, not everyone has the luxury of working a job where drug testing isn't a real possibility or having a lifestyle where they can perpetually be high.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to starting PT, but my lower back is still swollen and tight as hell right now so it's still too early. Glad to hear that the science experiments those whacky doctors have tried on you are working

    Re: Back pain!!

Going for an epidural injection on Friday. First time I've ever gotten one, anyone have experience with them and can offer some insight as to their effectiveness?

PS- Praying this science experiment works. Hasn't been tested millions of times or anything like that, really feel like the fate of my life is hanging in the balance with this one! [/sarcasm]

I had two herniations, the epidural made me feel better for about 12 hours.

The following surgery has fixed everything.

Damn, it's that temporary? My mom and my brother both have had lower back problems as well and have said that the epidural really helped them a lot.

I've already had back surgery once, and I know it's a quick fix which gets right at the problem, but I'm trying to avoid surgery this time. I herniated the same disc that I had operated on, so I only have one more operation left on that disc. If it were to herniate a third time, they would just remove the disc and I would have to get the fusion surgery, which is a fairly major operation. So I'm trying to avoid the second surgery to avoid the fusion, if that makes any sense.

It didn't work for me at all, but my herniation was pretty awful, the doc was shocked when he finally got in there. It was actually pushing the nerve branch the opposite way, so maybe the epidural was gonna fail for me from the start.
