Re: BWGK on Vinyl

Mobile Fidelity issued Nirvana's Nevermind on 200g Anaqdisc (or whatever the hell they call it) and it goes sealed for $400. However if you can find a copy of the original Geffen pressing it's generally found to be better sonically.

There's no real rules with vinyl, which makes it even more interesting and fun to hunt!! Some 180g pressings are remarkable, some 120g pressings are crap and vice-versa. As the pressing plants do more volume we'll hopefully see more consistent quality coming down the pipes. The quick spin of SIDE A of BWGK I had this morning sounded really good.

I picked up my copy of BWGK last night in Rochester along with a copy of the 7"...also found Jean-Michel Jarre's "Magnetic Fields" and Great White's "Twice Shy" in the used section for $8/each totally MINT.

I think I'm going to have to spin some records when I get home.

I just threw on Led Zeppelin I and it doesn't do that...
Same deal on mine with the smudges and the 'wave' phenomenon. I thought the felt was off my turntable at first but I made sure it was pressed flat and it still did the same thing. I only listened to the first disc last night, so I don't know if my disc 2 does the same thing. It didn't seem to affect the sound...but, weird.

Are you saying the grooves of the record are pressed so that the needle is moving inwards and outwards from the middle of the record with each rotation?

That, is not acceptable. Sony have done some good pressings recently and from what I understand they have a new lathe, so this type of thing shouldn't happen. I'm going to check mine tonight when I get home.

Which SIDE are you getting this on.

As for whether it looks dirty or not, that's just the type of vinyl that's being used. If you can hold it at angles so you're close to seeing it flat it should look clean. IE - hold it not so that it looks like this... O ...but so that it looks like this... __ ...if you know what I mean.

No, on mine it more like a 'bump' at the same point on the record on each revolution. Looking at the turntable from the side, it would give the impression that the record was warped, but it isn't. It's really odd.

So it's a vertical movement? That's better than a horizontal movement which would really throw off the speed/pitch.

Yeah. As the record spins around, you see the needle and the record raise up for a moment at the same point each time around, like its going over a speed bump. But when you set the record down on a flat surface, it's as flat as can be.

Mine moves horizontally. If you're looking down at the record while it's playing, the stylus will ever so slightly move towards the middle of the record, then back out towards the edge, then again. It happens about every rotation of the record.

The album itself sounds perfectly fine, though, which has me confused - I can't tell any speed or pitch difference from the iTunes version.

This is undoubtedly happening on Side A and Side B on my record. Haven't paid attention enough on Side C and D.

I will be giving mine a clean tonight and then putting them in Disckeeper anti-static sleeves - better to have them in those than in paper sleeves which can shred little particles.

Once I get the anti-static sleeve inside the paper sleeve and back into the cover future I"ll have it so the outer part is facing out of the sleeve, then I can just slide the record in and out without taking the paper sleeve out...because it is a tight fit.

These sleeves work really well - http://www.sleevetown.com/lp-sleeves-inner.shtml

Yes, it should be. If they're a decent record store. If not, I'm sure they can at least order it for you.

I am new to vinyl and have a new (cheap) turntable. I cleaned the record, but there are still some very distinct and annoying pops - during Grux most notably. Overall, it sounds considerably worse than other my other (very few) records. Suggestions?

Perhaps a bad needle? I don't know much about record players, but that's what I would point to.

How did you clean it? Do you have a hifi dealer close by with high-end turntables? They usually have good record cleaning machines. You may have a few pieces of paper that have come off the sleeve it's in which are barely noticeable to the human eye...but can cause pops and clicks. A good wet cleaning is my preferred method.

Mine moves horizontally and vertically. The only speed and pitch change occurs very very slightly on the first ohh 30-40 rotations, but on ALL sides of both records.

ALSO - Whatever machine packaged my vinyl completely crumpled up my Side A/B sleeve.
Has anyone else run into that?

Yes, mine was also crumpled on the one that I pre-ordered. The one I got at a local store was packaged cleanly.

I cleaned it with a RCA brush and liquid. You are right about the paper. The edges are flecked with white, and it is the start of the LPs that are the worst. Do you think I can get that off without a professional cleaning?

It's where you can hear the strings change pitch as the song ends.
It should sound like one note, yet you can hear it faintly bending in time with the stylus moving back and forth. The sylus shouldn't move like that, it's like an old 45rpm 7" with no middle adapter that you try to centre yourself.

They messed up the pressing. It's ever so slightly, but that's enough to drive you nuts when you're listening critically.
