Off the top of my head; Hunger Games and the bajillion dollars that they made. That last Twilight was fun from an action point of view just unfortunately too short. I'd have loved it had they taken to 80% of that movie was war scenes like Max just did, that would have been a riot. Those were both fairly one dimensional characters but so is Furiosa (not that there's a thing wrong with that in these types of popcorn movies). Just a couple hyped, popcorny recent movies that come to mind with "strong" female leads. Lots more over the years of various success.

I hate when movies try to hit you over the head with a political statement, this didn't do that.. Just very strong female characters that were great

To the underlined, what were they though? The themes I mean. Just that they throw off the bondage of a man? That she's tough and takes action? Her home? Was it that the women start from a position of weakness and take effective action to change that? Nobody ever says anything specific. They just keep saying things like, "feminist themes".
I am pretty much a gorilla of a guy so I'm sure the subtly has eluded me. I'd like to throw something other than a confused look and a repressed chuckle at the power suit women I work with every day. We were out for drinks afterwards and it was actually tough not to snicker as they talk about how progressive the film was for women. Try not throwing one of the best looking women in the world in the movie and then talk to me. Shaved head and half an arm or not. Charlize Theron is fantastic looking. This wasn't exactly a high demand performance either and she's got the chops for those.
This movie just didn't need them.
To the bold, I liked that too. Big issues stuff was there (environmental, war, savageness of the human state etc) but he didn't belabor them. It was just part of the world and not an agenda. Seems the same with the women, they just were the way they were for obvious reasons.
