If I were you, I'd just hit up some tasting rooms. Try as many stouts, porters, IPA's, and Pale Ales as you can. Then report back on what you like and more importantly what you hate. Then we'd be better able to direct you.
If I remember correctly, my first "craft" beer that I liked was Rogue Dead Guy. Give it a try if you haven't had it. Also if you can, get great lakes Edmund Fitzgerald porter. It's the gold standard in porters. Pick up bell's and/or founders standard stout bottlings if those are available to you.
As for IPA's, good god there are so many, I don't know where to start, and my wife is ready to enjoy some quality time...maybe someone else can pick up on IPA's.
But again first thought would be to go do some tastings at local breweries.
