He died in a boating accident, per Buster Olney, Ken Rosenthal and others.

The Miami Marlins confirmed their All-Star starting pitcher has died at the age of 24. According to CBS in Miami, police received a call of a possible boating accident at 3 am ET. Authorities found a 30-foot boat overturned that had crashed into the rocks off Miami Beach. The team announced today's game against the Braves has been canceled

Quick recap of the news conference. Speed was obviously a factor, all three on board were male, so we know his pregnant girlfriend was not there. Boat flipped completely over onto the jetty, two bodies found under the boat, one found on the other side of the jetty. Alcohol/drugs not immediately blamed, they're waiting on autopsy/toxicology reports to say for sure. The boat belonged to Jose's friend, Jose was a passenger, and the driver had been through that area many times.

Not a Marlins fan, but have their tv coverage, I had a lot of fun watching him and made sure to try to watch every start. He was something special. |

As a Marlins fan, I always joke that nobody knows about guys like Jose Fernandez and Giancarlo Stanton simply because they have close to zero exposure. But the outpouring I've seen from other fans and players is incredible. Really says a lot about the man and what he meant to those who knew him and saw him play. I'm so filled with grief I can't even stand it.
I spent this entire season telling everyone I knew to go see Jose pitch. "Go see them on Jose Day." I have a close friend who lives in South Florida who has soured on the Marlins because of the ownership, but I said that to him once a month for the last year. "Go see Jose pitch. Screw everything else, you need to see him pitch in person." I feel so privileged to have seen him pitch in person three times, even if he lost two of those games. I almost was going to go down to Miami today to see them play because of a ceremony they were going to do to honor Ichiro's 3000th hit, but decided not to at the last second because Jose wasn't going to be pitching (he got bumped to tomorrow). Then I woke up this morning and got the news he's gone. Surreal. |
