Was at TAVES on the week-end, many systems there that when you factor in preamps, amps, cabling, cartridge, etc., possibly hit the $250,000 mark and beyond. I took a few records with me, you gotta be careful what you choose because records not done well, when you compare to typical "reference" material used to show off systems, they can sound like crap. Loud CD-sourced vinyl would sound absolutley terrible and you'd look silly for asking someone to put something on that sounds like ass.
Anyway, was in the Mark Jones room who had this analog setup:
KRONOS Pro turntable: 38,000 USD -

Asked if they could put on the "all analog Bernie Grundman cut of Dire Straits Communique" and they said sure, which box is it in (pointing to their records). I pulled it out of my bag and said, "mint condition". They put it on, the room went quiet and they had it turned nice and loud, my buddy in the back said during the first song along at least 6 other people walked in. It sounded so freaking good, Mark Knopfler's guitar lines with intense dynamics were massive in the room while Pick Withers low toms effortlessly energized the room thanks to the two monoblocks ability to draw 2200 Watts in a moment's notice.
After the first track the guy running Mark's set-up at that time came over and said, "I'm sorry, you can't have your record back". Asked me if it was okay to listen to another track, hell yeah.
Afterwards outside another attendee came up to ask specifics on the pressing. It really is an audiophile reference record with very few equals.
