Like they start out awesome, but at some point they get painfully slow. And not all the time, but certain tasks will just hang and make you lose your mind.

Then again, I've never had a Nexus/Pixel where Google had that specific phone they could test stock android out on. Well I take that back, I flashed the stock GPE ROM on my M8. I'd like to think they'd focus on the pixel more than that one.

A lot of it is just how heavy the OS is in general though, which requires new specs.
My biggest issue with Android phones has always been how they handle updates to the OS. I had a Galaxy phone back in the day, and lots of other phones were getting Android updates, and my phone was not. There really is something to being able to maintain your own hardware/software like Apple does, especially with phones.

To be honest, it really wasn't. I remember my Note 7 had a ridiculous amount of useless apps from Samsung and Verizon. Also, the apps that did come pre-installed were all super easy to uninstall. I removed about 3 or 4 of them and kept 1 or 2

For some reason I was thinking even though they let you 'uninstall' those apps, it was really just hiding them from the user's view.

Edit: pretty sure this applies to the iPhone. May also apply to Sammy phones. Not sure.

Samsung phones let you "disable" apps which just means yeah you don't see them but they won't run or take up any more space besides the app itself. Better than nothing . And you can truly uninstall whatever you want if you root.

But my understanding was Nexus and Pixel will really let you uninstall.

^^ yeah that was my understanding.

My buddy got the pixel XL. He is loving it and said he'd put it right up there with the iPhone. His last phone was an S6. From what he is saying the battery is up there with what you'd get from a + model.

    Re: The Tech Thread

So maybe y'all can help me out. I have a Nokia Lumia Icon (yes, I know - Windows Phone jokes. But the hardware is still top notch and outside of the app-gap the software is really smooth even after 2.5 years) and I'm finally deciding to upgrade. I had my eye on the Galaxy Note 7....but, uh, that's kind of out the window. I had an iPhone 4S back in the day and while I liked it at the time, I'm not in love with the OS that is nearly identical to the original ipod touch 10 years ago; save for a few pull-down/up menus.

Anyone have recommendations? Looking for something with a big screen (Note or 7+ size) with a good processor, good camera, and preferably expandable storage

If I were going android I'd go Pixel XL. Doesn't have expandable storage though.

I think Motorola does a really good job as well. I don't know anyone with their current flagship (the Z), but I think most of them usually have expandable storage.

One plus 3 is a solid option for cheaper phones. Moto makes some solid budget phones as well. Just set my brother up with the G as he was on a budget.

Samsung makes that edge phone that's pretty much the same as the note minus the note-like features. Might be your best option if you think the Note 7 was for you.

Just some starting points I guess.

My personal favorite would be the iPhone 7+. You don't like the OS, but for me personally it does everything I need a phone to do. It has a great processor and camera and battery and will hold it's value well and they've proven to be reliable for me at least. There's something comforting about knowing Apple is going to have my back if they have a defect in the product as well (Google might do just as good, but I have complete confidence in Apple in this department).

They've made improvements to the OS as well. They seem small but on a day to day basis, I just enjoy using this phone (I actually don't have a plus right now, have the regular 7, but that's another story).

I was bored with iOS at one point. Went to android and after 18 months, I was ready to come back.

    I agree.

The pixel laptop was the sexiest laptop ever IMO. I never wanted a device that I had no need for more than I wanted the last Chromebook Pixel.

    Can you still jailbreak iphones?

You can. I haven't felt the need recently.

One thing to keep in mind, Apple has the 14 return policy no questions asked. I probably wouldn't jailbreak in that time but I highly doubt it'd be an issue even if you did. Don't quote me on that last bit.

Edit: Jk about jail breaking. Apparently it's been jail broken, but the tools aren't released for iOS 10 yet. That's what I get for just reading a headline a couple weeks ago and storing the info.

If you jailbreak an iPhone you can void the warranty. Obviously you can "unjailbreak" your device, but sometimes that doesn't work and can mess things up.

I'd give iOS another try if you've been out of the game that long. Otherwise go for the Pixel XL or S7 Edge. Both seem to be great devices.

Got an Amazon Echo Dot and I have to admit that it's really cool. It works very quickly and understands what I say from just about anywhere in the apartment even if it is already playing music. Insane for only $50. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...3aa3ed22e2.jpg

This is the only other tech I want right now, without really needing it

They were selling them in bundles too the other day at least. Another thing I wonder if it'll be cheaper come Black Friday.

Only reason I bought it is because it was in a bundle with the Phillips Hue Bridge and Bulb kit. The whole kit cost the same as the initial Echo Dot when it was first released this spring.

I would imagine Amazon would push these things big time for the holidays.

Cool. I work for SimpliVity (Hyperconverged Infrastructure) doing business development/inside sales. Any chance you've heard of us? Never really connected with any ants in IT before.
