I haven't seen any of S3 yet, but I hope they don't regress all the way back to the same thing they were doing S1. THAT would be a step back. I'd rather they keep moving forward and taking the show to different places.

I haven't seen any of S3 either (planning to start this week), but I agree with you about S2. Thought it was still very, very good. Like you said, they explore some very dark themes and there were so many moments that were just brutally emotional. Aya Cash deserves a damn Emmy for her performances.
Granted, there were a few episodes here and there where I thought it fell pretty flat (Jimmy's parents coming to town was pretty bad), but still thought it was a very solid season. They did a great job of developing some of the characters.
