Waiting at the airport to head to the Gorge! Figured I'd start the party early.

You didn't follow the correct Title format :-)

And the Best Western (and Cave B Inn) is going to block out Labor Day Weekend just on the chance of another Gorge weekend

This brings up a couple of questions. My friends and I will be Gorge first-timers this summer (hooray!) Neither of us are the camping type, however. So what are the hotel options, and should we book a room now to be safe? Also, aside from the party in the lots, what is there to do during the day in the area?

    Thanks!

Closest hotels are approx 30 miles away, Moses Lake to the east and Ellensburg to the west, book now and you can always cancel later, but camping is 75% of the great experience, and Premier and Terrace is pretty easy camping.

    Headlamp w/extra batteries
Pair of long pants/closed toe shoes/toque (it is high desert and can get windy/chilly at night)
    Koozie
    Hand sanitizer
Sun shade of some nature as the campgrounds don't have shade, you need to provide/create your own.

I am a proponent of the cooler as a suitcase method. I pack the majority of my camping gear in my cooler and check it. My second bag is a large rolling duffle bag that will accommodate the rest of my gear.

So the cooler is checked solo? I was aware that 5 gallons of booze can be checked but I did not know this. TY

Yes, I usually put my sleeping bag, camelback, small camp gear, lantern, etc.. into the cooler and strap it closed with luggage straps. As long as you keep it under the airlines weight limit you're good.

And some items, such as chairs, are better to just buy once you get to WA and donate to a local after the weekend.

Honestly, I could probably do the weekend with a total of 5 things if necessary but my list:
Headlamp - changes the game entirely
Mallet/Hammer - guaranteed 3 of your 8 neighbors will need to borrow this and scores you food/drinks the whole weekend
    Bottle Opener/Corkscrew - see above...
Large capacity water retention device - long hot days and lots of booze - stay hydrated
Ear Plugs - I like them for any concert I go to but they prove double useful if you spend the weekend in D9.
    Party Pants -

I should start a collection of these, store them for the year and haul them back for people to re-use...

Yeah that would be extremely useful. I ended up buying what I thought was a super cheap chair in 2011. Turns out it was for a very small child. Quite sad. But lots of funny pics!

I'm weird, I was never a fan of camping. I don't mind cabins, I'd rather have AC, a shower and a toilet than sleep in a tent that's all hot and shit.

I'll have the bathroom facilities, no need to fret about that I'm always worried that there is some creepy-crawly thing lurking in the cabin, waiting for everyone to settle down and then attack.

Packing tip: last year I read of the cooler-as-a-suitcase strategy, but took it one step further. Got a 48 Quarter Cooler (13x13x24), filled it with stuff and put it inside an airline-max 62" duffle bag, which gives another square foot of storage space (queen size air mattress) and the duffle keeps the cooler closed.

1 - Plenty of face lotion, hand lotion, sunscreen, chapstick. It really is dessert like and can dry out your skin and be super uncomfortable.
2- Coffee! By the 2nd or 3rd morning tons of people are there and I got super irritated waiting in line for 30 minutes to get coffee.
3- Water. Lots of water. Again, super dry plus drinking booze and being outside all day every day.
4- Seriously warm blankets and layers. I really did not realize how cold it was going to be at night. And bring a hoodie or something to the show. Even if you're hot on the walk from the campgrounds to the venue, bring it. As soon as the sun goes down you will be chilly. And it's a bit of a hike between the two areas.
5- Be prepared for rain. It didn't rain when I went, but my other friends had it happen to them and it will suck no matter what, but if you aren't ready for it it's utter misery from what I understand.

I'm not the biggest camping fan either. But it's kind of part of the experience and if you are adequately prepared, it can be pretty comfortable. Plus they do have showers if you are in the right camping area. Those were an absolute life saver.

It's really only hot when the sun is out; so the tent is perfect temp for the 4 hours or so you actually get to sleep before dawn - haha
