I think #27 makes a unique and fun show opener, but not after an acoustic set in 2014. Too mellow when you're expecting something more electric after 8-9 acoustic songs.

Hah! Is there a good gif where there's a parade going by, and at the end, there's one last guy walking through?

    That'd be perfect.

In hindsight, I should've known Ants would have the info before DMB got around to Tweeting it

eh, mellow openers don't really do it for me, period. everybody is excited and the energy is buzzing in the pavilion like crazy once it gets to be time for the band to come out. then they finally do and the place goes bonkers only for the band to go into something that you can't let your energy out during. the opener should be big, like "hey we're here! lets get this party started!"

and #27 just isn't that great of a song anyway

I hear ya. I think mellow openers work better when you're listening at home, from an official release or taper pull. But yeah, in person you want something that goes BOOM

Not like that Spaceman opener I got Camden N2 last year in the electric set. And I like Spaceman -- just not as an opener, at all.

I generally agree, but Dreaming Tree is still one of the best openers I've ever seen.

    Same with Seek Up.

I think it depends on venue as well. A place like red rocks, gorge, spac, alpine - opening with a classic mellow song (Seek Up, DT, Nancies) will get the same reaction that DDTW will get many other places (well, not really, but yeah.)

Idk man, I can't see myself complaining if I were to get a Heartbeat intro to open a show.

But I get that you mean song-songs. I'm just talking about opening up mellow.

that Dreaming Tree opener at camden 08 was fantastic, but camden is a crowd that would appreciate an opener like that. also, songs like DT and Seek Up, while they start mellow, they get big. Spaceman and #27 never get big. there is never an energy about them in the way that Seek Up or Dreaming Tree has.

^ I mainly concur with the "generally agree" point of view that mellow songs don't make the best openers. The Dreaming Tree and Big Eyed Fish make good ones. I saw Grace is Gone open WPB '12, it was a sing along but the "energy" wasn't there and went into Eh Hee so it took a while for DMB to get cookin'. I respect the fact that DMB (tries to) start(s) off slow and build(s) to a climax by the end. But they don't totally commit to that style of set listing. I like when Sweet opens or something unique like Loving Wings, Dreamgirl, Spaceman or #27. With that said, when songs like JTR, Warehouse, or What You Are open, right out of the gate it's grooving hard. I see both sides of it I guess. Still, just wish they were more adventurous with their set list choices.

    2015 Warm Up Series

    The Dreaming Tree
    Stay or Leave
    Grace Is Gone
    Beach Ball
    Satellite
    Big Eyed Fish
    Captain
    Crash into Me

These are all good 'mellow' openers to me...I don't necessarily think a song has to be super energetic to be a good opener.

Speaking of Beach Ball, I hope they release a Dave solo version from last year as a warm up video.

I'd love to see the Dave solo Beach Ball from Deer Creek last year be a Warm Up video. Great moment and performance.

one of the worst openings i saw was bethel woods in 2009. Proudest Monkey opener > Satellite followed by The Maker and Shotgun. the band was on stage for 30 minutes before they finally got going with Shake Me, but they already lost most of the crowd by that point.

another bad one was also at bethel and was a grace opener. grace > eh hee, followed by if only. buhh

i dont know if you can really count songs like Crash and Satellite. they are more mid-tempo and they were singles, so they have an extra energy about them because the entire crowd knows them.

im talking more like A Dream So Real, Proudest Monkey, and Spaceman

I'd feel better about the shows if they were both electric sets, but I'm thinking it's going to the be same format as last year because they haven't promoted it at all other than it will be 2 sets. They had to promote it hard last tour to make fans aware of the major change up but now that their repeating 2 sets this year, they don't need to define it again. If they were going to do two electric sets, I'd feel they'd promote that accordingly to set expectations.

Anyone else feeling kind of "meh" about the whole summer tour videos? Once in a while they seem to have a good song choice or stand out performance but they feel middle of the road overall.

That says more about the crowd at the show than the band.

I just listened that DT from Camden '08 the other day. I LOVED getting that opener. The show is average at best, but that opener was beautiful.

Honestly, I have no problem with a mellow opener. I think ADSR opening shows in 2007 is beautiful, especially followed by that killer Two Step on 10/2/07. Dreaming Tree, Seek Up, even #27 can all make great openers in my opinion.

What I don't like is when they open mellow in the 2 set format. After 8 acoustic songs last year, I wanted the electric set to open HARD. Minarets was great in that slot in 2014. Spaceman at Camden, however, not so much

At a regular show, I wouldn't hate Spaceman as an opener. If that makes sense?

What I don't like is when they open mellow in the 2 set format. After 8 acoustic songs last year, I wanted the electric set to open HARD. Minarets was great in that slot in 2014. Spaceman at Camden, however, not so much

At a regular show, I wouldn't hate Spaceman as an opener. If that makes sense?
I got a Loving Wings opener once, enjoyed that.

That's cool. I went into the id3 editor double clicked the art and used the snipping tool to get it.
