Re: Death on the High Seas

B&BB and Virginia in the Rain really connect with me. This one hasn't really yet. And Be Yourself is literally the worst thing they've ever written.

Anybody hear Gas Into Fire in the verse melody? Sounds VERY familiar.

Wasn't impressed by this last night. I like the chorus and Dave on piano parts, but everyone else sounds like they're noodling fill ins. Doesn't seem complete at all

When Mercy was first played solo on Fallon, I was unimpressed. The studio version turned out very pretty. Hoping the same happens here.

Anyone transcribe lyrics for this one yet? I see the virginia ones were transcribed in the other thread.

Hopefully it isn't. And since it basically debuted as an intro, I think that's fairly likely.... it's just an idea right now, and they're going to play with it live and try different things and see what works.

My prediction: they'll be some awesome renditions this summer, and then the final version won't use any of the good bits and everyone will be pissed off.

B&BB especially for me, but yeah, both. I'm glad at least some of the new stuff is emotionally resonant... that was on of my principal complaints with BW. It's not that the songs are bad, far from it, they just didn't make me feel anything.

Listened to this song once really gives me the feel of A Dream So Real or Falling off the roof (two songs that never really amounted to much).

I would think that too, if we didn't already know Dave has been working on this song since 2013. Hopefully it's just something he is playing around with, not necessarily on the new album.

Re: Death on the High Seas

    Trading yesterday for tomorrow
    It’s all used up
    Floating out to sea
    Message in a plastic bottle

Oh baby, don’t you, don’t you
    Cry, cry, baby, cry
Oh baby, don’t you, don’t you
    Oh baby, don’t cry

    One word then you walk
    One step then you talk
I can’t believe how you look now
Oh remember one step in the door, leave
I feel my heart bursting at the seams

Who could change the words of a dollar
    To read “in country trust”
    It’s like we’re living in a dream
    Dinosaur is waiting for us

Oh baby, don’t you, don’t you
    Cry, cry, baby, cry
Oh baby, don’t you, don’t you
    Oh baby, my child

    One word then you talk
    You took me to fight
My heart’s bursting at the seams
Oh it’s crazy one word then you talk
    One step then you walk
You know it’s gonna be alright baby

Throw a little mess in a bottle
    All used up
I think we’re floating out to sea
    Dinosaur is waiting for us

Oh baby, don’t you, don’t you
    Cry, cry, baby, cry
Oh baby, don’t cry, I love you
    Oh baby, don’t you cry

    One word then you talk
    One step then you walk
I can’t believe how grown you are

    ???
    I don’t believe the feeling
    ???

    One step then you walk
    One word then you talk
I can’t believe how grown you are

    ???

Those lyrics are really nice. Way better than anything else recently. Love this part:

    Dinosaur is waiting for us

To me this song is haunting like Blue Water is haunting... The overall flow and feel is very dreamlike and surreal. Death On The High Seas has me very excited for the release of this album; Excitement that had died out when Be Yourself debuted.

I think this is a pretty cool song. Both songs remind of Radiohead (I know such an original thought), but this song reminds me of Pyramid Song which I think is one of the most beautiful songs by Radiohead.

I actually thought the opposite. I liked the solo version, then it was pretty miserable at Hangout Festival full-band. Didn't like the studio version either. The outro just DRAGS on and on and on at a full band show, playing the same stuff. Not a fan.

I'm not one for analyzing lyrics too deeply, but just from glancing at the above lyrics, it seems a straight-forward lament about the environment (all the garbage piling up out in the oceans and how humans will disappear like dinosaurs).

Id rather hear a 10 minute Mercy than Gaucho...but maybe that's just me. I think Gaucho is ass...

I had the same impressions with Mercy, though I sort of have the feeling that Dave has moved into a more mellow, low key, song-writing stage which most fans will have a hard time accepting. While the lyrics are strong the energy is lost. Not to say the songs suck, they are just very different. Its kind of a shame given the fact he is surrounded from some stellar musicians who contribute little to almost all of the "new" songs.

Parts of this tune are dangerously close to ripping off Pyramid Song. Those are definitely the same voicings Yorke uses on more than a few Radiohead songs. And they both start with falsetto over those chords ...

I doubt it was intentional but someone should probably let Dave know ... Radiohead doesn't strike me as overly litigious but in a post-Robin Thicke world they could probably win a lawsuit against DMB

Yeah a clean version would be great, but I don't think there is a clean taper pull of this. At least if there is I haven't found it.

In the best recording Ive heard you can make out the lyrics, but I cant hear shit from anyone other than Dave and a wee bit of Carter
