D&T Radio City, ten years later

It's 4/22/17, which means it's exactly ten years since one of the best - in my personal opinion - D&T shows ever (I realize it's not as popular on this forum). Thought it needs to be commemorated.

Best performance of Stay or Leave (full band or otherwise)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_lG6nZPrxo

Amazing vocal performance on #41 (see 2:35)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WReZ6sC8JBw

Great Two Step ending
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pgb4AvMWNYE

And yeah, can't believe it's been a full decade... One of my favorite albums ever since it was released

It was a good show, I do think the night before at the Mullins center would have been a better release though.

Still one of the best concert Blu-ray releases of all time for audio and picture quality, reference material no doubt. Would love to see Sony do an expanded Gorge '02 Blu-ray.

agree that the sound and video quality alone is worth it... though i was never a huge fan of the setlist. for as many WOW moments they had (Bartender, #41, DDTW, Two Step) there are just as many forgettable moments (Old Dirt Hill, Eh Hee, Oh, Cornbread, WTWE). and a few head-scratchers (Tim's LIOG solo, Down By The River, Gravedigger).

all in all, a bit too much Some Devil (and i LOVE Some Devil) and unreleased tracks, and a poor cover choice, in my opinion. take out those "forgettable songs" i listed above and put in Grey Street, Typical Situation, Granny, and Captain/Raven, and now we're talking all-time-classic.

    Wow I feel old.

Important show, but certainly far from one of the best ever D&T shows. I haven't listened for a while, but didn't they use auto-tune on Dave's voice on Crash and #41 (and maybe others)?

Anyway - still can't believe they haven't released a true blu-ray since this.

the mix really captures the tones of the instruments they're playing. i love this release for that reason, but the meh songs on this release really drive it out of the best category

certainly best sounding D+T release, however, from a guitar standpoint

for seasoned D&T listeners, it was a unique and sort of "avant garde" solo.

but for newcomers to D&T? they still have NO IDEA what Timmy can do on LIOG. which is ashame.

but, it was Tim's fault for doing it.. so who gives a fuck.

This is certainly not the best Dave and tim show. And it's certainly not the best Dave and tim release. Luther college blows this out of the water.

With that said this is pretty good and I enjoy it

To me It's also a great release in terms of sound mix. The guitars sound so warm and real; I can barely listen to the Las Vegas release, it sounds like it was recorded through a tin can, and the guitars ring out some sort of an echo that completely alters the sound... Radio City is incomparably better.
Luther College is great, but the songs (from today's perspective) seem a bit underdeveloped and Tim doesn't get as much spotlight. It's a great show and an amazing release, I'm just not really a fan of Dave's pre-98 voice, even though on that release he doesn't sound so nasaly as usual

I mean, I understand the technical difficulty of the solo, but that doesn't make it good. Some will argue how hard it is and how impressive it is, which I understand - but it's just annoying. It's like a constant ringing in your ears. I'm not a fan.

I think he should have just done that at a normal show instead of a released show so that version is more appealing to the masses.

#41 on Luther College blows Radio City #41 out of the water. Billies is fantastic, Ants is amazing...I think Tim "not getting as much of a spotlight" is actually a good thing. He doesn't need to be so overpowering and works way better in LC.

I don't know exactly what you mean by the songs feeling "underdeveloped". Which ones are you talking about?

wait - Tim's one-note solo on the Radio City LIOG is technically harder to pull off than his usual dance around the frets? i find that hard to believe. but i'm not a guitar player so i know when to STFU... just doesn't make intuitive sense to me.

Tremolo picking on an acoustic for that long, and keeping the tempo that steady, is unbelievably difficult. He puts a lot of passion into that one note, and Dave's dynamic build behind it is just phenomenal from a musicians standpoint. Easily my favorite D&T LIOG release. Try keeping up with him sometime, I think you'll be surprised just how technically challenging it is.

Having pristine audio and picture of those two Tim solo tracks alone is worth the price of admission on this Blu-ray. Love The Maker here too.

The LIOG solo is pure gold. I'm not a player, but I can imagine how difficult it would be to hold one note that long. I love the face Dave gives him in the middle of that solo. Can't believe this was 10 years ago!

the argument over tim's solo here comes up every so often.

I don't give two shits how hard it is to do, it sucks. that's my take on it. it could be harder than splitting the atom, the goal is not fan service to guitar geeks, it's to entertain audiences. there's a market for those guitar gods who do the hardest shit on the guitar. they play town halls and casinos.

You'd be surprised. I've played some tim songs and fills before and they are all pretty difficult. LIOG solo note is no different.

Might not seem so on paper but it is. Solo's have rhythm. The movement of your fingers across the fretboard kinda help you get in the groove, its all muscle memory. When you have to sustain a vibrato for that long, that fast, on one string (eventually two) it can become extremely difficult. Lets keep in mind he was shredding that solo on an acoustic. Its a lot harder to do that with steel strings than it would be on an electric. The precision for that solo is just as hard as anything else.

Dave got into it a lot, you could hear his guitar getting more intense as well, and the crowd too. You can feel how intense everyone under that roof was feeding off of each other, so I'd say it was pretty spectacular in my opinion.

I don't give two shits how hard it is to do, it sucks. that's my take on it. it could be harder than splitting the atom, the goal is not fan service to guitar geeks, it's to entertain audiences. there's a market for those guitar gods who do the hardest shit on the guitar. they play town halls and casinos.
which it most certainly did given the feedback from the audience afterwards
