R.E.M. Appreciation Thread

I searched and I didn't find anything unless it's in the Chat Threads forum, but R.E.M. definitely needs an appreciation thread.

Love these guys, one of the best bands ever and Acceleration is one heck of an album.

saw them this summer at jones beach. national and modest mouse opened. during modest mouses set a ridiculous t-storm came in, lightening struck the venue and everyone was asked to get for cover as torrential rain came down.

show ended up going on about an hour or so late, playing in lightening and rain. it was freaking great (even though the set was shortened b/c of the late start). came in with relatively high expectations and they were blown away. here's teh set and some vids.

Have You Ever Seen the Rain (CCR cover)
    So. Central Rain
    These Days
Living Well is the Best Revenge
    What’s the Frequency Kenneth
    Man Sized Wreath
    1,000,000
    Ignoreland
    Hollow Man
    Welcome to the Occupation
    Houston
    Electrolite
    Horse to Water
    The One I Love
    Let Me In
    Bad Day
    Orange Crush
    I’m Gonna DJ
    Supernatural Superserious
    Losing My Religion
It’s the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine) (stipe said this was completely unrehearsed, but thought it fit the night)
Fall on Me (with Johnny Marr)
Man on the Moon (with Johnny Marr)

Wow, that is a great set. Would have loved to been there for that.

I wish Houston was a longer song, I love it.

I had a hard time liking them in the 80's, but by the 90's they won me over and I really love the old stuff now.

    Great band.

Everyone gives the late 90s-early 00 albums a hard time. I really like them.

I have a hard time getting into their pre-Out of Time albums. But even they have some greats.

It depends on where you were in life when you heard them, I think.

I'm not knocking anyone for liking those albums, I just don't think they are very good.

They sound too rough to me. And Stipe didn't have as strong a voice until Out of Time.

So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry) rocks though.

I love the "rawness" of their sound during that time.

I agree. There's nothing like a nice, deep sleep to rejuvenate me. And you can dream during REM, so that's cool.

I grew up with the rough sound in a lot of bands. That's probably why I connect.

A band from my town, the Goo Goo Dolls, started out as a shitty punk band. In my opinion, their first two albums are their best, but that's because I was there when it was happening. I remember seeing them at Knights of Columbus halls and firehalls and stuff.

Their newer music doesn't connect with me the same way and neither does REM's, except for Accelerate, which is more like their older stuff.

REM's old stuff is great. That's not to say their stuff from the late 90's was bad, but their early stuff is just so good.

Cuyahoga is such a good song.

Quoted for truth! Easily my favorite REM album.

    Love REM!

The '....and I Feel Fine' (Best of the IRS years) was a rediscovery for me of the era when I became an REM fan... it's the best 'Greatest Hits / Compilation' album I've ever listened to.

Through the years, it's like they've been 3 different bands for me.

    1. The IRS (Indie Label) years
    2. The Warner Brothers Years with Bill Berry
    3. Without Bill Berry

The music all sounds so distinctly different to me with the albums produced during those three time frames. I really liked Accelerate and thought it was a return to a true 'Rock' sound for them.

Two notes I felt worthy of mentioning.

    - I have been extremely addicted to 'The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite" lately. Such a fun, great song.

    - Until The Day Is Done off of Accelerate is so phenomenal.

I listened to some of their earlier albums and I have to retract my previous statement about them being "too raw". I love the sound.

    Perfect Circle ftw!
