About Nirvana

I think it is a terrible tragedy that we never got to see where Nirvana was going as a band. You Know You're Right is a solid song, and it really seems like the band was heading in an interesting direction. I've seen an interview clip with Kurt saying "I think we'll lose a lot of fans with our next record..." that seems awfully familiar... Maybe Nirvana's "No Code" was on the horizon? I don't really like Nirvana's albums, but it just seems as though the were on the verge of something totally different and maybe great... I don't know if this makes sense at all. Thoughts?

I think youre totaly right. Nirvana wouldve set even more of a precident for the modern rock scene had they been able to continue. Its almost like Jimi Hendrix or Randy Rhodes or SRV or any of the other greats that died at their prime, its incomprehensible how their style wouldve changed the way music is today. But just the same, its almost as big an influence on music to see them burn out the way they did instead of drag on and loose the edge they held.

I concur...In Utero seemed like the start of almost a new band, especially when compared to Nevermind.....I think they were planning on heading in the direction of songs like "Milk It" and "Scentless Apprentice" and it would have been nice to see the finished product....

i guess that most good bands try to find new ways of making music and that maybe making always the same old thing that works and sells is just too commercial...anyway, kurt's death made em legends but i still dont' see their clones (and it's funny, cos there r always bands-copying-bands)

I think Kurt was getting ready to take Nirvana into more of an acoustic/folk direction and that it would have produced some outstanding music. I think their next album would have featured a lot of songs that had an All Apologies / Something In The Way vibe. I also think it would have been really interesting to see how the band would have evolved and handled Dave emerging as a songwriting contributor. Hell, I wouldn't have put it past Kurt to say "fuck the mainstream" and to have made a super experimental record that would have alienated his casual fans the same way Kid A alienated causal Radiohead followers.

I have some bootleg stuff from them that's pretty good. Their MTV Unplugged show still resonates with me.

Someone says this every time Nirvana comes up. So I don't think you are. Same goes for the Beatles, it's like an automatic knee jerk reaction for people.

love their unplugged performance. Plateu, Lake of Fire, Something in the Way..... loved it
Though I think that without that particular performance, they wouldnt have had as many fans that normally wouldnt have been into that kind of music, and fans of them moving forward

I've never gotten into Nirvana a ton but I'm also not the kind to blindly dismiss something I've never listened to in-depth. I'd love to hear what people think is so great about Nirvana. I've probably heard 20+ songs by them and my roommate in college was a huge fan so I always caught bits and pieces of them all the time. Musically, they seem very simple (usually just four-chord power chord progressions on a majority of songs I've heard), and I can't get on board with not being able to decipher the lyrics when listening. Can anyone shed some insight onto something I'm maybe not picking up on?

Have you listened to the Unplugged album? It may sway your overall opinion. You're right though, musically they are fairly simple. But so was Johnny Cash. So is Bob Dylan for the most part. I hate to be cliche but its all about the energy and authenticity communicated through the music that made them special.

That said, they are absolutely, 100%, overrated as musicians. That isn't to say they aren't/weren't talented or didn't create some amazing material because they are and they did. But their place in the history of music is solidified not necessarily because they were musical virtuosos, but rather because of their impact on the musical landscape in the early nineties. Its all about context with Nirvana.

EDIT: Personally, I would rather listen to AIC or PJ any day of the week over Nirvana

I like a lot of their music but they are overrated musically. Their influence was massive but I have no doubt that they would not be a revered as they are had Kurt not killed himself. Pearl jam would be looked at as the kings of the grunge era had Kurt stayed alive. I think they would have broken up like most of the other grunge bands and they would be viewed in the same light as a band like STP. Great songs, great band, but far from the legendary band they are today. Pearl jam transcended grunge and made very different and unique music later in the 90's. nirvana just wasn't talented enough to do anything like that I think they hit their peak and would have broken up or faded into obscurity.

No doubt their initial influence was absolutely massive though.
