Re: About Nirvana

Nirvana changed music

Pearl jam followed them.

I love pearl jam as many here know, but nirvana is and always will be better.

Very creative and different from ten in every way. Pearl jam are better musicans, lyricists, and Eddie is by far a better singer. Sure people can prefer nirvana's music but to say none of pearl jams 11 albums are as creative as nirvana's glorified b-sides album is a little silly.
PJ completely changed their style and sound with every album, that's pretty creative if you ask me.
The bold is absolutely laughable. In Utero is anything but a "glorified b-sides album." Come on.

And while I agree that overall Pearl Jam is comprised of more talented musicians than Nirvana (Grohl is among the most talented between each band), that has nothing to do with the discussion.

From a mainstream standpoint I don't agree with the bold. Obviously Bleach was released years earlier, but Ten only came out about a month before Nevermind. Each band was heavily involved in the change in music during that era, and while I'd agree that Nirvana had more of an impact I don't think PJ followed them.

This debate makes me feel like it's 1994 all over again.

    Re: About Nirvana

Nevermind did set the stage for many other albums to see better sales. Nirvana's major label debut knocked MJ out of the #1 spot on Billboard in January 1992, Ten broke the top 10 four months later. Saying one band followed the other isn't the right way to put it, I don't think you can't say Pearl Jam followed Nirvana without acknowledging all the other bands that "followed" the explosion Nirvana created, the table for which was set by bands like Jane's Addiction. Smells Like Teen Spirit brought all the other great tracks into the mainstream spotlight, including Outshined, Man in the Box, Alive, Head Like A Hole, Give It Away, Been Caught Stealin', Hunger Strike, etc.

If Kurt had lived I wonder if Grohl would have continued to passionately pursue songwriting? I think Nirvana would have produced some pretty incredible albums if they had both Kurt and Dave writing tracks.

Agreed. Though I am a Foo Fighters fan, Nirvana seemed more...Authentic? Where as Foo Fighters seem more..MTV? Best way I can articulate my position right now

    Cobain≥Vedder>Grohl.

I agree. Kurt's hit songs weren't hits because he was attempting to write a "hit" but because they were just so fucking good and imbued with a passion that spoke to you on a visceral level. The Foo Fighters's hit songs seem like they're written with the intention of being hits. Grohl clearly writes for the radio which is something that Kurt never did

Here's the thing about the Nirvana / Pearl Jam "debate". Nirvana reached legendary status (and earned their induction into the HoF), based on 3 albums work of material (and really it was just 2 albums that cemented their place in history). Would Pearl Jam be respected as much as they are if they stopped after 2 or 3 albums?

I was going to say something like this, too. There's not really a fair comparison to be made. Pearl Jam got to continue evolving--Nirvana was cut short. If the whole of DMB had, say, perished in a fiery plane crash after the release of BTCS, who knows what people's view of them might have ended up being... they would never had a chance to make a mediocre album.

PJ's best music, in my opinion, came after 2 or 3 albums. Ten's what they'll always be known for though. great rock album
