If you listen to Bootsy Collins playing by himself, you would be able to tell that its Bootsy, baby.
Same with Stanley Clarke, Flea, Marcus Miller, Jack Bruce, Victor Wooten, Rhonda Smith, Willie Weeks, James Jamerson and a number of bass players.
If you listen to Stefan riffing on his own in succession with Jeff Ament and Adam Clayton, you would be hard pressed to pick out who is who unless they played a riff from their recorded catalogue. You would say that all of the players are good, but there's not a defining voice. Not a recurring theme. Not a particular tone set that is particularly loved. And other than a love of phasing, even Sting is mostly unrecognizable when he noodles.
He is a phenomenal pocket player, which not enough people recognize as the bass player's primary role. I would argue he is one of the better pocket players out there. I would love to hear Stefan have a more active role, but on the last album the moment where he was the most present was in the bridge of "Gaucho." He does great supportive and background harmonic lines, but rarely does his line take a more integral role.
