I think having largely female cast movies are a fantastic idea, but the fact that they are all remakes kinda takes the wind out of the sails I feel like. It defeats the point.

right. that's almost exactly my take. if you want to feature women prominently in your movie, make a new movie. if you want a black james bond, write another action movie for a black action star to be in

problem is those movies can't get financed

you'd think eventually execs would realize that people want to see a good movie more than they want to member ocean's 11. but that may take decades

It seems silly that executives still have that mentality. There are plenty of non-franchise stories geared toward women that were huge hits - The Help was one, Orange is the New Black is another on the TV side of the spectrum.

Also just the simple fact that pretty much 100% of people agree TV is, on average, better than movies at this point. Not sure why they don't give more original scripts a chance. Not like they have to spend $100M on each one.

Is there anyone better than Jake Gyllenhaal?

Also the trailers did the movie zero justice.

    It deserved zero justice.

And Michael Shannon and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were both better than Gyllenhaal.

the end of the tour - thought segal was excellent. definitely worth a watch if you enjoy DFW's work

annie hall - fantastic. still has some very funny, relevant moments for being 40 years old

blue ruin - quality indie barebones thriller. decent clip of violence as well

99 homes - strong performance by michael shannon with some rough lines to deal with

Eh, don't really agree with Bond. That's a recurring character, played by several different actors already, with new episodes (if you will) each time, so not really a remake as such. Elba would be a good Bond.

And they pretty much did make him his own film so he could kinda play Bond. It's called Bastille Day. It's pretty good but few will see it, which does illustrate the problem you mention.

    Le Samourai

Awesome movie. I started this super late last night, and when I do that with a movie that is both foreign and old, I usually end up thinking it's a bad decision on my part and call it a night by the 20 minute mark. This one kept me all the way. I loved the story, the direction, the performances, the whole atmosphere of this film. Jean-Pierre Melville is three for three with me. He has a way of pulling me into a state of suspense with near silence. No ominous music or flashy editing - just the pure ability to make me feel like I'm in the scene, afraid of hearing a pin drop or a character walking in at the wrong time to make me freeze in fright. I've seen people tag this several times (not on Ants) as "style over substance". I really disagree with that. There's substance to being able to effortlessly pull your audience into your world when they started your film after 1 am. And there's plenty of substance and analysis to discuss on the ending, which I will of course, not give away. I feel this movie had a major influence on Drive (I think I probably even read that at some point or several before), but I liked this one far more. This movie is high art, and I highly recommend.

My issue is that in addition to the streaming service, I still pay for physical discs with my Netflix subscription. I do that for the very purpose of tracking down harder to find movies. I've only come across a few that I couldn't find thus far.
