Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Le Samourai
Awesome movie. I started this super late last night, and when I do that with a movie that is both foreign and old, I usually end up thinking it's a bad decision on my part and call it a night by the 20 minute mark. This one kept me all the way. I loved the story, the direction, the performances, the whole atmosphere of this film. Jean-Pierre Melville is three for three with me. He has a way of pulling me into a state of suspense with near silence. No ominous music or flashy editing - just the pure ability to make me feel like I'm in the scene, afraid of hearing a pin drop or a character walking in at the wrong time to make me freeze in fright. I've seen people tag this several times (not on Ants) as "style over substance". I really disagree with that. There's substance to being able to effortlessly pull your audience into your world when they started your film after 1 am. And there's plenty of substance and analysis to discuss on the ending, which I will of course, not give away. I feel this movie had a major influence on Drive (I think I probably even read that at some point or several before), but I liked this one far more. This movie is high art, and I highly recommend.
