Also, not just 'another country', but arguably the most influential country in terms of pop culture on the planet.

I'm well aware of what transcendent means. Do you not know how to read? The American media chooses to ignore him. At 25, Messi won his 4th Ballon d'Or this week, which is more than any other player in history. That is the equivalent of LeBron passing Abdul-Jabbar's NBA MVP record, yet there was hardly a blip of coverage by the U.S. media. The media agenda in a single country doesn't determine transcendence.

I would put Messi and Ronaldo (sp?) over Cruise, Hanks and the Pope. Since we're talking about a global scale.

But if he was transcendent, it would be a story. Tiger Woods cheating on his wife transcended sports, it was on national news, not just ESPN.

Ask 100 random people from Argentina who Jordan is, and more will know than if you ask 100 random people from America who Messi is.

Pele definitely passes the recognizable test by all accounts, but having not lived in South America, and hearing next to nothing in the US that you don't seek out yourself, I can't really speak to his impact...

even with your ridiculous historical analysis, you actually make my exact point...men who killed far more wouldnt even crack a couple percentage points on this poll..Stalin, Mao...who? yea, exactly.

Im with cruscott on this one. I am very familiar with Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, and David Beckham.

I knew nothing about Messi. Heard his name in passing, but not even close to the transcendence of those other 3 over the past 10 years...

To those that know nothing about soccer, those would be 3 names that id bet come up more than Messi...

Beckham is a "transcendent" soccer player to Americans simply because he married a Spice Girl and moved to LA.

He has won the FIFA POTY/Ballon D'or in 2009, and 2010...and 2011....and 2012. Any 'avid' sports fan should know damn well who Messi is.
