Fun photos. Those ones with the light bands are pretty cool. Did you build whatever was generating the light yourself or what was it?

I wish it was something I built...

I haven't gone beyond the demo mode yet, but this thing has incredible potential... you can program images into it and "paint" them across the frame...

Actually using / needing a lot of pro settings on a cell phone camera is something I might debate, but I like that he draws attention to the fact that QUALITY comes from ability and knowledge.

I have an app that allows for much more control. I find it most useful for extreme exposure control.

can someone give me a run down of the best entry to mid-range dslr deals for black friday/cyber monday?
I've seen the T5i equipped with the 18-55mm STM and the 75-300mm at $700

would be more comfortable around the $400-500 range though

    Re: ***Official Ants Photography Thread***

That 75-300 is not so hot a lens. If you can find the 55-250 IS II instead, that's a great lens for the money. Girlfriend had the 18-55 STM for a couple days worth of shooting and went back to carrying the 10-22 and the 40 but I thought it was fine for what it's made for. To be fair the 10-22 and 40 are fantastic lenses and it's not a tough decision which ones to use.

I just sold my t4i because I switched to m4/3 but really liked the camera for the money. t5i is just a better version of that and my girlfriend shoots the SL1 which is a tiny rebel without the flip up.

I know that's not really price/deal info but hopefully it's helpful at some point. I just sold my t4i kit and 18-135 STM (it wasn't a great lens) for just under $500 shipped used. I probably could have gotten another $100 out of it if I had tried hard. Thousands of photos and several vacations went through it with a hitch.

    Re: ***Official Ants Photography Thread***

I just had some large photos printed by West Coast Imaging using Fujiflex Supergloss paper. One of them was 24" x 36" and the other a 16" x 24".

    http://www.westcoastimaging.com/

That paper is really amazing stuff. If anyone is familiar with Peter Lik's work or seen any of his galleries, he uses Fujiflex Supergloss paper for his photo prints (as far as anyone can tell, he's not really forthcoming about the subject). Under the right lighting conditions, it's almost magical. It's almost more like plastic than paper. It sort of has a metallic look to it, but it's a MUCH more natural glow than metallic paper. As you physically move around the image, areas of shadow and light get brighter and darker that just gives it this interesting glow. It's impossible to appreciate it without seeing it in person. The one downside is because it has to be developed on a printer that uses light to expose the paper it's maybe not quite as sharp as inkjet-type photo printers, but unless you're comparing the two prints side by side you would have to be being really picky to notice the reduction in sharpness of the Fujiflex paper.

The two photos I had printed are these:

    http://benckphotos.photoshelter.com/...000_abnzKx_s_g
    http://benckphotos.photoshelter.com/...000_abnzKx_s_g

Also, from the same photo lab, I have coming a huge 30" x 45" print of my photo of the national anthem during the MLB All Star Game from Target Field.

    http://benckphotos.photoshelter.com/...000y0WPnRXQA2M

I wanted maximum sharpness for that print, so I went with an inkjet based paper (I compared several proof prints to get just the look I wanted). It's going to be face mounted to acrylic, so there will be no need for a frame. I think the acrylic face mounting will really make the print pop.

    http://www.westcoastimaging.com/services/#mounting

I spent quite a while trying to find just the right photo lab who could pull it off the best. So I can't wait to see it.

Glad you liked the photos. You just need to know the right settings to use at a concert, then it's pretty easy. I think for that show I was shooting manual at f/2.8, 1/60 to 1/100, ISO 1000. The rest of it is just timing and shooting when the lights are the most interesting. However, that Fuji does have a APS-C size sensor, so it's got the same image quality as most DSLR's essentially.

I usually stick with anywhere from 1.8 - 2.8 when up close in the put, I lock it around 1/160 to 1/200 and keep the ISO around 800.

I'll have to try lowering the shutter speed for some wide shots.

are you guys running aperture priority or mostly manual?
I typically leave my s95 on f/2.0 (lowest it has) and then just try and keep the ISO <=1000
the sensor on it is garbage though now a days

I have an S95 too, but haven't used it in a couple years. If it's a concert, then I shoot in manual so the camera doesn't get fooled by the lighting changes. After a little bit of shooting at the show it's usually pretty easy to tell when the lighting conditions will require a different setting, either a small bump up or a small bump down in shutter speed or ISO. For wide shots you can get away with 1/125 or even 1/60 if you're able to keep still enough during the shot. I'd probably say that if it's a wide shot of the whole stage, there probably isn't any benefit to going faster than 1/125. If it's too bright at that point, I'd rather either use a smaller aperture (like f/4) or turn down the ISO a little bit. The closer you get, the brighter it usually is, so it's easier to get faster shutter speeds. Unless you're shooting a punk or rock concert where the performers are jumping around and stuff, then 1/250 is probably all the speed you need on the shutter speed when you're up close since most of the time the performers really aren't moving fast at all.

this. I usually shoot manual. I used to shoot on "Tv" but the lighting changes kept messing me up.

really? They are a pretty big band in the jam / bluegrass scene. But I guess if you aren't into that it's easy to miss them.

I've seen them probably 3 or 4 times now at various festivals and Red Rocks. Definitely a great time every time, but sometimes their jams are soooooo extended and spaced out I just get way lost.

There are a few of their tunes that are always stuck in my head. "Hard Livin" and "Colorado" are a few of my favorites.
