The Notorious BIG - Ready to Die
2Pac - Me Against The World
    Nas - Illmatic

And as far as newer rap goes I also got:

    36 Chambers, absolutely.

Doggystyle is a must if you're exploring g-funk, I prefer it to The Chronic.

Wu-Tang and its members go on an insane run in the mid-'90s. Enter the 36 Chambers is incredible and then some of the solo stuff (GZA's Liquid Swords, Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Lynx, ODB's Return to the 36 Chambers) is just as good.

It isn't definitive, but a lot of the great classic rap records are on this image from Reddit's HHH sub.

So Ready To Die was a pretty cool album. Had some duds, but damn that thing had to be pretty raw for when it came out. Some of the sound design and skits made me feel uncomfortable. Especially the gun in the mouth bit.

Gotta take some time to let it digest. Illmatic is my next listen through.

After you listen to Kendrick's record, you should check out Lupe's new album "Tetsuo & Youth". it's a perfect introduction to what good hip-hop sounds like today.

Contains an amazing live version of Gun In Mouth Blues, one of the craziest performances ever put to vinyl, and yes CD, for those so inclined.

Jimmy page just picked up a mandolin, had no idea how to play it and then wrote the music for that song. It is amazing.
