Whats the differences between the "motion control", "the performace training," "stability", and "cushioned." I am a novice when it comes to running.

This summer I have been really dedicated in going to the gym. Doing 30 minutes of cardio. But when I am on the treadmill, my shins and legs start to feel like i have a thousand needles going into them. I think it is probably the shoes I am wearing/ the extra weight I am carrying.

Also, are there any tips for becoming a more fluid and succint runner? There is this guy at my gym who runs with such ease and grace. His motion is very graceful. I want to look like that

I know that this question was directed at Jason, but I will toss my .02 into the mix.

The best person to answer your shoe questions are the well-trained people that work in the running shoe specialty shops. When I bought my first pair of true running shoes in March, I went through a 30 minute observation and test by the person that was fitting me. Then they brought out 4 pairs of shoes that thought would work best for me. I did a little light jog in each pair then picked the one that felt best.

I have to say, the pair that I bought are great. I have no leg pain before, during or after my workouts. The only discomfort is the natural stuff you get while you body adjusts to the routine. The corrcet pair of shoes will make or break not only how you feel when you run, but if you continue to do it. If you feel good during your run, then you will trek on, increasing your time and distance. If it hurts while you run, you will stop.

Can't really help with the more fluid question. Actually I wonder the same thing myself. Anyone out there have some pointers for us less experienced runners?

The question is for anyone willing to answer heh! Thanks for your advice. I am going to go to one of those specialty running shoe stores. I have no problem with building my endurance, but I hate running on the treadmill because it hurts my legs/knees too much. I want to feel challenged when I run, not like I am being cleaved heh.

You are a crazed lunatic. You remind me of my friend doing his crazy training thing. Last week he racked up 105 miles in 7 days.

I don't know how you people do it. I get out for my 2.5 to 3.5 every morning. I am trying to get up to 4, but am having a hard time. My goal is 6, so I have some work to do. I am just taking it slow right now. Last time I tried to get to 4, I pushed to hard and ended up with a bum knee. So this time, slow and steady.

Well I just finished my XC training camp for school. Our last practice was this morning and our coach had us do six four hundred meter races with two minutes rest between all of them. I stayed under two minutes for all six, and boy I'm happy.

Wow, Matt. Congrats. That is some crazy, and impressive, stuff right there. Most people think that the 2 minute rest is ample. By the time you get to the 4 race, that 2 minutes seems like 20 seconds.

Thanks. I was fucking exhausted. The fifth one, or the fourth, I don't remember, was the hardest. The last one, Carter's solo in Halloween came on, and I sprinted the last 100 meters or so.

It's ok. It's not great. Sub 16 is pretty awesome, but the course was hilly and it was humid. 5K ain't really my thing, I'm more of a 10K through Marathon guy.

I run a mile about 4 days in a row, then take a day or two off. I never ran this consistently before and I feel great, have lost 15 lbs and actually enjoy going out for my run everyday.

I was always the fat kid in gym class who hated to run.

    Haha.

Good Morning Runners! Nice to see the thread getting some love.

Milenk, nice job on the win. Your time might not have been what you wanted, but I would be happy with that time.

Sean, Keep up the good work man. I am still building my endurance and miles, but stick with it. There will be times when you just don't want to get up and run. GET UP! You will be happ you did.

Matt, I have yet to see SuperBad myself, so please no spoilers.

Just saw this thread, thought it was pretty interesting. Where do you guys run to and/or who do you guys run from?

My preferred mode of transportation is car. I suppose if it broke down and I had no other option, I'd ride a bike. Running, to me, would be a last resort.

I think most people run for 'fun'. It is an easy, and cheap, way to get in some exercise. A good pair of shoes will cost you about $100. You can start running in any shorts or shirt you have. A pair of basketball shorts are cheap and a step up from denim.

The easiest thing to do is just start walking on day. Add in some jogging, and before you know you it, you can run a mile.

First race of my career and it went pretty terrible. I am extremely disappointed. Ran five miles, 47:23. I went out way too fast, a huge fucking hill made me stop a few times, and I was exhausted by three and a half miles in. It was the worst run I've ever had--and yet, I cannot wait until the next one.

    Re: **Official Running Thread**

Wow, that totally sucks Matt. Hope the next race is better.

Speaking of 5-mile runs, got one on the docket myself tomorrow. Have to get out prior to the insane heat we are having here in SoCal. As I type this at 7:30 PDT, it is 90+ outside.

    Holy crap. Nice job.

I was going to post that I ran 6.6 miles today, but that pales in comparison to your achievement.

    Congratulations.
