I just started mixing up some old fashioned,(with whiskey) usually only a beer drinker and it is unbelievably tasty.

Drank a couple Manhattan's last night with the cheapest Four Roses ($16 for a 750ml), holy crap was it good. I've had Four Roses single barrel and their small batch, but the Yellow label was easily the most drinkable. Very, very smooth.

My Weller 12 arrived today. This is top notch bourbon. and even a better QPR than eagle rare. Just fantastic stuff.

Don't know the last time I've had a Manhattan. Just add vermouth and bitters right?

I'd like barrel proof on most every bourbon/whiskey I drink.

Lexington Bourbon is a new favorite that I've had recently. Highly suggest it.

It was like $41 here in OH...state minimum pricing

I was really impressed with it. I think I'd still probably prefer eagle rare, but I'd have to do side by side to know for sure.

I had quite a few of the Hudson offerings last week. Baby bourbon, 4 grain, and manhattan rye. They were all REALLY good.

A few notes from my whiskey adventures over the past few months....

right now drinking Colonel E H Taylor Barrel Proof - which is fantastic. Makers Cask strength is really good...if you like Makers, you'll love its more concentrated form. Also recently (FINALLY) found a bottle of Angel's Envy Rye which is finished in Rum casks...this stuff is AMAZING and totally worth the price (I was NOT a fan of the standard Angels Envy). I've got some Sazerac cocktail mixture (Bulleit Rye, Bitters, brown sugar, Absinthe) sitting in a 1 liter oak barrel...I had hoped to age it for 4-6 weeks, but now it seems unlikely to make it that long. Sazeracs are THE cocktail...can't believe I went 30+ years without having one.

And finally...it's that time of year. The BTAC collection has just hit a few states http://bourbonr.com/blog/2015-buffal...release-map-2/ , so time to start stalking your favorite liquor store. Also, I hear the Four Roses LE Small Batch is pretty ridiculous this year. Pappy, EC 18+ year, and Birthday Bourbon out soon too. Happy hunting.

Had no idea Angels Envy Rye was a thing. Wasn't too big on the original Angels Envy (minus the bottle - which is awesome!). We used it in a cocktail where I used to bartend. IMO it should only be drank on its own...

Just finished my last bottle of Woodinville Rye.. should have brought more then 2 bottles when I moved out of WA :,(. Been loving half n half old fashioneds with that and Woodford.

Been on a Basil Hayden's binge after finishing that last bottle of rye

Just tried some new(ish?) Johnnie, 10year rye cask aged.

Was actually pretty good, doesn't taste like their normal blends. Much smoother.

Their 12 y/o single barrel first fill is really really good. And only 10 or so more than the standard doublewood.

Spending $200+ on a bottle of scotch is a little extreme for a go-to scotch (imo).

Any sipping Bourbon suggestions for me? Just moved close to a huge Binny's and want to try something new this week.

I typically sip on Knob Creek, Basil Hayden, or Bulleit Rye.

Regular Bulleit is solid - the non-rye variant.

I think Buffalo Trace is underrated, probably b/c it's cheap. Stagg Jr. is great.

Oh I absolutely agree, were I to buy a bottle it would be for very special occasions and very special people. It would not be my "I've had 8 pints, 2 rum and cokes and 1/2 bottle of wine and now I want a scotch" drink, that would be Glenmorangie 10 YR if I'm dumb enough to drink a scotch after all that!

Love the Doublewood and the 12 YR single is within my comfort zone, good chance I may try that one soon and keep an eye out for deals around Christmas/Boxing Day for the 17 YR Doublewood and maybe 21 YR Portwood next year.

This kind of money is hard to put into drinking when I have so many upgrades I'd like to make for my stereo that last as long as I want them to, vs. the 15 to 20 drinks that I'll likely get from a 26oz'er.

Probably the best way to try these more expensive ones is at a pub specializing in scotch where you can get an ounce for $20 or so. This place in Toronto has a decent scotch menu - http://www.thecaledonian.ca/whisky.html

Glad to see you mention GM. I find that to be a very underrated dram and distillery at large. At least in terms of just folks talking about them. They were pioneers in the popularization of "finishing", and they're 12 year old range is more affordable than almost any of the competitions similarly aged offerings.

I'm with you on the BV 17. I'm thinking about looking for one for the holidays. And by looking, I mean - telling my wife I'm going to spend $100 on a bottle of scotch
