Why would the show answer questions to weird happenings in the first episode?

You have to build a foundation first.

Honest question: Is this a full series or True Detective / American Horror Story type series? It's my impression that it's a more traditional show.

Not that it's been picked up for even a second season, but the thought process behind the show is to be which type?

Re: THE LEFTOVERS (new HBO series from Damon Lindelof)

My feelings of the show being pretentious mostly stem from what I feel was an overuse of a melancholic score almost any time anything remotely emotional occurred, as well as the screaming in the pool scene. I think the score often felt like it was being used an emotional crutch to express the story's importance, rather than letting the writing and performances carry that emotion on their own. As for the pool screaming scene, that moment just doesn't feel earned at all yet at this point. I think we barely got to know the son or the relationship that he has with this girl, so I felt really disconnected to this rage he was feeling, as if there were scenes missing in the pilot that would have made that scene carry a lot more weight. Showing a couple scenes in which he dodges his father's calls and him being a little upset about the instructions he was given from the man he's working for didn't quite cut it for me, for making that scene have any real emotional impact. I think they just went a little early on forcing a poignant moment before it was able to have a really satisfying payoff, and that's why I use the pretentious criticism because of how it constantly insisted on its own poignancy when we're still barely getting to know these characters. Had a great deal of the music been cut out, I think it would have been a lot more understated and I wouldn't have felt like the poignancy was being force fed down my throat.

speaking of which, was I the only one who didn't think it was entirely unreasonable she took a shot at the other girl's nose? I mean the girl did take a seemingly unprovoked HARD shot at her shins. with a field hockey stick, that don't exactly feel nice.

On the issue of the statue, not sure if people are being critical of the writing or the characters on this, but in defense of the show, I definitely thought the corniness of that statue was totally intentional on the writer's part. Humans do really corny, sentimental crap like that in the wake of tragedy in real life and I thought it was a bit of a commentary on that kind of behavior. On top of that, they put a lot of development on the anniversary event being a bad idea altogether, and the statue was the cherry on top, IMO.

well I'd wondered about this myself, and think I talked about it some in here already. I know it's definitely not an anthology series like those two examples, but given that it's based off just this one book, I would imagine it wouldn't be the kind of thing that will just go on because it can. And especially given Lindelof has this kind of experience already with Lost, of being able to know more than one year in advance when he'd like to stop because it's ultimately a self-contained story, just longer than a season's worth.

I skimmed over an interview given by one of the cast, and the only reference she made to it was that they're "hopeful for a season 2".

Three times watching the same episode inside a week seems counter-productive. It would seem a lot more useful to watch the first three episodes to determine whether it's catching your interest. If I watched the pilot three times for Silicon Valley and gave up, that would have been a big mistake because I didn't care for the pilot, but that show vastly improved in the subsequent weeks.

wasn't the statue even brought up at that meeting and some people were talking about how ridiculous it was? i don't think it was a very prominent discussion, but I'm almost positive it was mentioned.

Just watched the premiere. Weird, intense show but we were intrigued.

Very curious about the "white walkers". Wouldn't be an HBO show without them. Was surprised when she talked at the end.

Line of the premiere was when the lady in the bar asked him where he was when it happened and they flashed back to him having sex with I assume his wife. His reply was something like "clearing the gutter". So that's what they are calling it now.

Lots of faces I recognize and knew not much going in.

Meade tells us there is more to Aimee than meets the eye, "I had a conversation with Damon (Lindelof) where I said, 'I don't want to be the girl you tune in to see her boobs every week. I had no interest in that.
