Dear Non-Disabled Folks

My Fellow Fans,

1. If you borrow someone's parking placard to get better a better spot, forcing people who are actually disabled to park further out and walk more, you are a dick.

2. If you buy a wheelchair seat because you're half blind in one eye, you are a dick.

3. If you vomit on the floor of the only accessible bathroom stall, you are a dick.

Sincerely,
Karma

Borrowing someone's placard? Why didn't I think of that?! Thanks for the idea, OP! Would have never thought of that without your thread.

Careful, brah - you can get busted fairly easily. When you get a placard it comes with an ID card with your name on it that you're supposed to keep with you at all times. If they ever ask you to show your card or otherwise prove that you are in fact the legal possessor of said placard, you can get fined and your granny can lose her placard and be unable to obtain a new one. Would you want to be the one to tell your granny she can't park up close to the bingo hall anymore?

Now, on the other hand, if you want better parking but don't want to shell out for premier parking, you can buy a concert ticket for someone who is legitimately disabled and bring them along to take advantage of their parking. Because buying stuff for other people is cool!

P.S. To my fellow people with disabilities: If you lend your placard out to someone else so they can get good parking at a concert, you are a dick.

There was a woman with an apparent leg injury who was in a wheelchair directlt next to me in the pit tonight. I felt bad as she couldn't see and people kept bumping in to her.

I know you're joking, and you know you're joking, but I suddenly got hit by the paralyzing fear that I might actually be giving someone a "good" idea and felt the need to quash it.

Plus, ya know, there's always the hope that someone will read this and think "Gee, she's got a placard! I should buy a ticket for her and drive her to the show!" Because free tickets and rides are awesome.

    1) Bold- maybe not best word usage given the context of this thread
    2) Bold- always thought the expression was 'squash it'. Could be typo, could be wrong on my part....
    3) Bold- sounds like people helping people. Encourage a fan who has a placard to attend a show and even buying their ticket, on top of a free ride.... I don't know....

    1. *snort* Phrasing! Wait, are we still doing phrasing? How are we not doing phrasing anymore?!

    2. Quash is legit. Squash tends to refer more to physical objects, whereas quash is used for the impalpable (to quash an idea or a rumor).

    3. Dude, my cousin actually offered to take me on their next family vacation to Disney World, all expenses paid, because we get to cut in front of all sorts of lines. I see nothing wrong with playing the system so long as the person who has a disability gets to fully participate and have fun.

I gotcha. Just figured I'd have some fun with such a random thread

My father actually suffered a stroke last year and was given a placard for his/my mom's car for life. It's not something to be abused because one thing I hate more than anything is seeing somebody who uses it when it's not needed. My dad does not use it unless it is necessary/ is having a bad day. It happens. But it's simply there for when he needs it. Not like some folks out there who use it constantly or who are simply obese with no other handicap besides that, using it to perpetuate their laziness...

Should we have the discussion about non handicapped people using the handicapped stall?

As far as ADA seats, venues put these seats up for sale like 60 days prior to show. Seems odd to me although I did get some sweet instants from warehouse at SPAC that said "hearing/sight impaired"

I use my placard constantly, because I run out of energy very quickly and the less I have to walk the more stuff I can actually do in a say. And if you see someone who's obese, don't be quick to judge them as having "no other handicap." A lot of people - myself included - are obese because of another health condition and so what you're seeing is essentially a secondary disability/health condition. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 15 years ago and between steroid treatments, increasing mobility difficulty (foot drag, muscle spasticity, etc), and the fact that the majority of restaurants that are actually accessible are fast food (so if I want to get dinner with friends that's often what we're stuck with), I've gained a lot of weight. Yes, I use a walker and so it's pretty damn obvious that there's something going on beside me being fat, but there are other people out there with similar backgrounds who are then being called lazy by ignorant people on the internet.

I'm sorry your father had a stroke, and I sincerely hope he's doing well. My 70-year-old father has Parkinson's and has a folding cane which he only brings out while commuting to ensure he can get a seat. It's so hard to watch our parents get sick, isn't it?

Some disabilities can not be seen by the outside, physical world. Empathy and compassion should be remembered but yes - don't abuse the system. It's a system after all.

There's nothing wrong with currently abled people using the handicapped stall, so long as a) if there's a line for a large number of stalls and a handicapped person comes along they're allowed to wait on the side for the handicapped stall; b) the currently abled do not make it absolutely disgusting for the person who can't come along, see the grossness, and move on to the next stall; and c) the currently abled person isn't just sitting there texting for five minutes despite knowing that there's someone outside waiting who can't use the unoccupied stalls around them because none are accessible.
