What is your political affiliation?

I'm curious what the political affiliation breakdown is here.

Votes are left anonymous for discretion.

I was a Republican until 2011. But I grew to realize the Democratic party aligns more with my views.

I'm the same way, I'm not a down ticket Democrat. If an Independent or Libertarian candidate is better, I'll vote that way.

Re: What is your political affiliation?

Believe it or not I actually registered as a democrat in 1996 and cast my vote for Clinton than in 2000 I voted for Gore. I also attended numerous fundraisers and such for democratic candidates in my state. Then 9/11 happened and the more I read about al queda and terrorist groups I realized the democrats don't know squat about national security (3 times Clinton had chances to take out Bin Laden and did not give the order for whatever reason) so I switched to the GOP. Now with partisan hacks with more hot air than brains like obama, pelosi, reid, boxer, hillary, etc, etc I cannot see a situation where I would vote for another sissy who wants to cut our military and tax me to death to pay for their pet projects!

One thing I wonder about, most people I know around my age that are Republicans mainly claim the party due to national security issues and not social issues (such as gay marriage, for one). Is that true of any self proclaimed Republicans here? It seems the GOP platform is anti-gay for most candidates, but many Republicans seem to not agree with that part of the GOP but still vote for Republican candidates.

To me gay marriage and abortion are side issues, neither of which I care much about either way. I have no issues with gays nor do I much care about abortion in the first 2 trimesters. What I do care about is national security, our economy, the absurd amount we are all taxed and our national debt. Obviously I cannot speak for everyone but that is how I feel and why I believe that the GOP is far more qualified to deal with these issues.

Does it worry you that pretty much every GOP candidate is putting forth tax policies that will increase the national debt by a large amount with no concern for cutting the government?

Social security, medicare, defense, and interest payment on debt is something like 80% of our budget. No GOP candidate I know has any real plan to change those three things. In fact, most want to increase defense so any offsets to social security and medicare will likely even out.

Having said that, they want to reduce tax revenues by 40-50%. GOP candidates usually use unrealistic economic growth to try and explain how they'll increase revenues to pay for the current budget. How can we pay for those tax cuts when we don't make drastic cuts to the budget as well?

Lots of people ask democrats "how are we going to pay for all these things?" When that question should also be asked of republicans "you aren't making any meaningful cuts to the budget yet tax revenue will decrease greatly under your plan, how are you going to pay for our current budget?"

I wish the GOP candidates be more specific myself to be honest when it comes down to cutting spending. Empty promises is all I hear. Of course our national debt would not be anywhere near as big a problem as it is is obozo did not add well over 11 TRILLION bucks to it!

You have to look at "reducing the national debt" through a global lens. If the US significantly reduces its debt without other countries doing the same, the value of our dollar skyrockets and our goods and services can no longer be afforded by consumers in other countries. Which leads to economic disaster here. Our measly 300MM citizens can't support our economy.

    EDIT: sans significant currency charades

not really all that big of a jump percentage wise. Bush Jr. and Reagan added MUCH more percentage wise than Barack did. Why don't republicans understand math? thats what i want to know mostly.
