Shotgun on BW?

As much as I love Shotgun, I don't think it fits. B-side would have been great, though.

I think it could have fit. I think the song that best compares to Shotgun is LITHOG and that is one of the best songs on the album. I'd take Shotgun over Dive In.

I don't know.. it's been played live so much, I'm worried it will be a pale imitation of its live incarnation, like Joyride and Grey Street. Those songs benefitted so much from Dave going for it vocally in the live setting, and he felt so restrained on the studio versions of those. Same thing as WIA and the Cornbread studio versions from this album.

The last time it was played, it was more or less about the death of Anne...something I'm sure drove Dave away from playing the song more frequently.

I would like them to actually finish the song because right now it isn't very good.

I think they should've done Shotgun up right for Big Whiskey.

    Re: Shotgun on BW?

The way I feel about all these songs is that the band wanted fresh stuff. They came through this rebirth of sorts and they didn't want things that they were working on when "the poison was leaking in" so to speak. So save that sort of stuff for b-sides and such.

So many fucking threads about this one song. I think it's good, but I couldn't have justified taking any tracks of BW to make room for it. I voted keep it live. We all have copies of it, so who cares if it's studio or not.

Because it's studio... I prefer studio stuff for listening. Only very few live audio is worthy in my iTunes

    Re: Shotgun on BW?

Not going to lie, I'm glad it did not make the album. Shotgun is such a great live song that I really dont want to be let down by a studio version, a la Why I Am.

Hearing Why I Am live before studio got my hopes up tremendously, and I really thought Why I Am could have been one of the bands best studio songs to date. Its still a fantastic song, but a little underachieved IMO.

That being said, I really think Shotgun would have been in the same boat. A lot of people put that song on such a high pedestal that regardless of how it sounded, ants were going to be disappointed. The band felt as if it didnt fit on the album, and this was for a reason. Seeing how great this album is, I most defintely trust Rob's judgement in terms of BW's track listing.

    I'd love a B-side though

The only part about Anne was in the end:

    Sister mother what .??..
    Never .??...
    No more you're gone
Never had the chance to say goodbye
    Bye bye
    Why

    What has become of us
I love you all the way you .??...
    All of the kids .??
We all will laugh and .??...
    What of a sister's love
I'll give you everything to have you back
Again and a one of us
    I'll hold the loneliness .??...
    What has become of us

And I think the only reason why he included this is because he was in the mood. The song lyrics of "Come Back, Come Back" right before this part definitely got him in that mind set which might have caused him to run with improv lyrics about his sister. I wouldn't say that because of this last part is the soul reason why Dave stopped playing it. That's a lot to assume.
