    We by Yevgeny Zamyatin
Pretty much the first dystopia book. Apparently most of the others (1984, etc.) borrowed quite heavily from it.

Eh, I had more time to read with my summer job last summer. I still wanted to read "My Friend Leonard" by James Frey, but who knows if I'll get around to that, what with my hectic summer of working 4 days at my college-town, and driving back to my parents' to help them move...

Curious, how often do people read in general... books that is? My friends range from a book a week or so like me to some people that won't even touch one unless it's assigned reading for a class, and even then they'll scan it.

In general I think people need to read more. It opens a whole new world of entertainment.

To answer the thread question, I have no idea. Whatever strikes my interest - probably a few dozen books at the very least. In the last week I've read a German Colonel's WW2 memoir and a small but fun bio on Mickey Mantle. Today I started Robert Ludlum's The Icarus Agenda for some fiction fun.

    One of my favorites.

I also highly recommend Infinte Jest by David Foster Wallace

As to how often - often, every day. How many books I go through varies a lot depending on how heavy my reading is for school. (I work full-time, and I'm a grad student, so time can be pretty limited). So far this year, I've read 13 non-school-related books.

I read Collected Novellas a few months back, which consisted of "A Chronicle of a Death Fortold" and "No One Writes to the Colonel". He is a great author.

Right now This is what I hope to accomplish:
    How the Irish Saved Civilization
Graham Greene's Catholic Novels (there are a bunch of novels that he wrote that are considered in that category)
Born Fighting (I forget the rest of the title, but its about the Scots-Irish in America)
    Racing the Enemy- Hasegawa
    Lennon
GAAP 2006 (not to read from cover to cover, but to gaze at and expand my knowledge in accounting)
and a few other books one of my professors recommended before I finished his class

Wow... some nice choices. Gotta tell ya though, Wouk bored me a bit. He reads like Bruce Catton IMO - just dry.

I just can't do it. I'm pretty sure it was public school and their selection of boring literature but I can barely get through one chapter of any book before I become extremely bored.

Last book I read from cover to cover was probably a goosebumps.

It's sad too. I would love to read but I just can't do it.

I'm 300 pages into Winds.. and I have to say, I love the style. The essence of these books is in the detail, and the character development, and the intricacies of everything...and I think he does it wonderfully. Plus i'm a sucker for long, sweeping, epic-like works.
