Great idea Erich.

The second one is the best of them all in my opinion.

Re: Stand Up Review Thread

here is one from the MU student newspaper 'The Maneater'. Not saying it's a good review, just throwing it out there:

Kind of strange how plenty on the boards are disappointed with Stand Up but most of the articles are quite positive about the new album

That's cause most of them (apart from the second one, and another one or two) aren't written by fans. Thus they're more positive. They won't be so critical of the band, and compare everything to BTCS.

So, can I assume that you are one of the many people who dislike the album?

Re: Stand Up Review Thread

Well, it's not really any secret as to why reviewers like the album. The songs are just more accessible. They grab you pretty fast and honestly, they're pretty damn unique. Will they have the staying power of some of the more complex songs in DMB's library? No, probably not, but for Joe Average, the radio listener, these reviews are probably a good indication of what he'll think of the album.

It's more like a faraway star for me. It took a while for the light of it to arrive, but when it did it was illuminating.

Re: Stand Up Review Thread

^ From the Blender article:

"Best are the moments when Matthews relaxes, playing with his itchy baritone as he fingers another easy guitar line and his band follows along. Does the pop world need another isolated oddball? Not so much. But this Dave Matthews, the one wearing team colors in a globetrotting amazing race, is one worth rooting for."

"Isolated Oddball"?? ------>Is he an oddball?
"Easy guitar line"?? ------>His songs aren't always "easy".

Not too happy with this article.

Re: Stand Up Review Thread

Hey guys. Just read a rather unfavourable review in today's Herald Sun (Victoria/Australia's biggest newspaper). Unfortunately I could not locate it on the paper's website so I cannot post a link to it, but here's what is says:
"Though artists he has inspired - such as John Mayer and Jason Mraz - have found varying degrees of success Down Under, Australia has remained largely immune to Dave Matthews' charms. And with good reason. Whereas Mayer and Mraz mostly keep their overcooked, muso-baiting, six-string pleasuring for the live arena, DMB let it all hang out on record.
Thus where a rock fan might look for a hook, DMB offer a snazzy sax solo, far-out fretwork or perhaps some pretty plucking. There is no urgency in the songs or delivery.
Unless Graceland-era Paul Simon was your last musical hero, or you're a misplaced Deadhead looking for a new band to stalk, let's keep this stuff "only in America."
Rating: 2 stars out of 5."
Not having heard the album (my copy just arrived today and is waiting for me at home!!!), I cannot comment on THIS album. But to me this reviewer is just anti-DMB. If you want urgency and rock hooks, listen to Everyday. Us diehard DMB fans want the "snazzy sax solos and pretty plucking." At least, most of us do.....

Re: Stand Up Review Thread

Here is 2 reviews of Stand Up from Paste Magazine:

Patriotic
by Nevin Martell

Dave Matthews Band’s sixth studio album, Stand Up, ?nds the Charlottesville, Va., quintet collaborating for the ?rst time with producer Mark Batson—a man best known for his work with the likes of Eminem and 50 Cent. His in?uence manifests itself most noticeably in Carter Beauford’s drumming, which possesses a newfound hip-hop sensibility with its sharp rhythmic phrasing. These head-bobbing beats are well-paired with Matthews’ engaging lyricism, which swerves between his usual lovestruck declarations and more serious post-9/11 ruminations.

Tracks like “American Baby” are Matthews’ most politically outspoken to date and imbued with a true feeling of innocence lost as he intones, “If these walls came crumbling down / Fell so hard to make us lose our faith” and as he later laments “Nobody’s laughing now / God’s grace lost and the devil is proud.” Thankfully, the ?vesome hasn’t lost its knack for writing jammy, feelgood tunes, like the country-fried stomper “Hello Again” and the neo-soul-in?uenced “Everybody Wake Up (Our Finest Hour Arrives),” a perfect panacea for these dark days. So even if Stand Up only inspires listeners to get up and dance—rather than march or protest—it will have done its small part to bring some light into the darkness.

Idiotic
by Dave Sims

Dave Matthews’ somnambulent croak has always been more suited to prurience than protest, and Stand Up makes for a nice case in point. The album opens with his trademark heavy-lidded leer, eyes locked like a smart-bomb guidance system on a south-bound bead of sweat, rolling over in rumpled covers, and hey babe, y’know, let’s make love. But he attacks the politically tinged “Everybody Wake Up” with his voice draped in the same gauzy purr, giving the impression of a well-meaning MoveOn.org’er who can’t seem to shake a hangover.

A couple of hazy mood pieces (“Out of My Hands,” “Steady As We Go”) fail to coalesce, and the 16 Horsepower reference of “Hello Again” feels less like experimentation than a desperate grab for musical distinctiveness. When Stand Up isn’t wandering around in search of a hook, it’s straining past a perfunctory sense of outrage, and in both cases generally gives up and turns the track over to Carter for a drum solo. The inexplicable closer, “Hunger for the Great Light,” is a bizarre, disjointed attempt at mystical vision pulled to earth by greasy sensuality and bombast. If aimlessness and overproduction hadn’t already grounded Stand Up, “Great Light” could have done the job by itself.

two different reviews, I dont mind bad reviews of the album, but the last review, am I missing a bunch of Carter solos on this album? I mean American baby intro, and the end of American baby, otherwise what are all the carter solos about?
