You Never Know Time Signature

The time signature for you never know puzzles me. It's obviously something in triple meter at least during the chorus. Is it through the whole song though? I'm curious to know.

Re: You Never Know Time Signature

The intro and chorus are 6/8.

Actually, most of the song is in 6/8.

The verse part:
"One day we might see
Doing not a thing
Breathing just to breathe
We might find some reason"

...is in 4-bar phrases. The first three bars are 5/8, the fourth bar is 6/8.

Re: You Never Know Time Signature

they mess with 5 and/or 7 during that tune too. The linear drumming of Carter and his snare placement makes it hard to count

No, they don't.

The way I described it is the way it is through the whole song. I've counted the whole song through and my way fits just fine.

It may be that Carter's accents give you a feel that it's something different at different times. But the way I described is the way the song works the whole way through.

Well that depends what you wanna call the "verse" part.

If you can read guitar tabs, check out: http://dmbtabs.com/song.php?sid=78

Based on that tab, it's the "Pre-Chorus" that is in the funky (3x 5/8's plus 1 6/8) time that I was talking about. The rest is straight 6/8.

Re: You Never Know Time Signature

Thats why I love this song--the time sig. It seems so hard, but it is very simple. (unless you're not very good at counting)
