I think Jake said that early on there was a song called She Said. But that it got scrapped. And I think it got divided into ABI and The Trouble With You.

Re: American Baby Intro

I have always imagined it as a guy in bed late at night or something. He is sitting there thinking about how many times she said she loved him, would always be with him etc. "She said 100 times, She said 1,000 times". The begining part of the song with Boyd is just where he is going over it and over it in his head and the storm is slowly building. Then all his thoughts just completely take him over and he screams insanely just getting it all out. Once his energy is spent he passes out and the storm slowly subsides. When I listen to the song and think about it this way it is just crazy. I get chills up and down my spine. Of course that is just one way to look at it.

Re: American Baby Intro

i pretty much agree with silt. i have loved this song since i first heard it. the first time i heard it live i was blown away and just stood there with chills.

ive always thought it meant something along the lines of "she said..." i'll always love you or always be with you. and dave's perspective is that of a widowed husband. to me its not as mad as halloween, and so not referring to a split between two people. this song always sounds more painful and helpless, which to me seems more like grief, heartbreak, lonliness, something like that. but that is my personal interpretation and just how i hear it. all songs have different meanings for each fan.

but in any case, hearing this live for the first time was one of my greatest concert memories.

Re: American Baby Intro

Great live, awful on the album.

But, I'd like to hear where the "she said a thousand times" came from. Apparently, that part was taken from some other song and combined with the main part what we now know as ABI. I think the song was called What She Said.

Re: American Baby Intro

I often like to think of it as dave recounting an erotic night in bed with a female who is screaming her lungs out.

...but maybe thats just me

20 seconds of the song is good, the rest is a repetitive bore

I think a poll needs to be made discussing ABI opinions, because they vary wildly.

Re: American Baby Intro

Best version I know of so far = 12-15-05 Check it out if you can, imo it's far better than red rocks or any other live performance I've heard.

It's tough not to love that song, even if it's not as deep as some.

Unless you were in the studio while they were recording it..you really don't know what it means or what parts of other songs are in it.

Re: American Baby Intro

I can see this song as being a sort of Halloween or Last Stop that doenst get more than a few plays each tour 4 or 5 years from now...

had they played it at Alpine this year, I woulda flipped... in a good way

People need to understand that this is DMB 3.0. You will never have 1.0 (91-00) or 2.0 (2001-2007) ever again. Just enjoy what you have while you still have it.

Re: American Baby Intro

its the intro to american baby (we all know what thats about) and, on the album, which includes the "she said..." lyric, theres all that annoying gunfire and bombs going off in the background. ABIntro.... gunfire and bombs: the song might have something to do with war

You just know MistreatedLewis has written some program on his PC that checks every Ants post every few seconds to see if it contains the keywords "Two Step" or "American Baby Intro" and automatically vomits out a reply of pessimism.

ABI can fluctuate rapidly; 6/10 is wicked but 8/12 is pretty awful. I like the album version though, they might have dropped the machine gun sounds to improve it a bit. Lyrically it's far too generic to read into it too much; you could read pretty much whatever you wanted. You could maybe say it's got some meaning behind it, but Dave probably just came up with these lines randomly one time and decided to sing them to this, chances are he hasn't put too much thought into it (and Stand Up in general).

Re: American Baby Intro

Do the ABI haters like the jam at the end of tripping billies, LIOG, etc? Because if they do...I mean, they're all the same concept: a few notes played over and over again with violin on top of them.

You're exactly right, but I think that certain chord progressions sound good and interesting to some people, and to other people, the same progression might sound uninspired and boring. For example-

I think ABI, and LIOG are beautiful progressions, and I could listen to them for extended periods of time. However, IMO, Smooth Rider and #36, sound dull, and lifeless to me, and I'm bored after the first 10 seconds.

Right, except, you know, with a brilliant pop song that comes before the jam that actually got worked on
